Storing Important Information
How can we store information accurately for long periods of time? If we tried carving it in stone it can last several thousand years, based on the hieroglyphs used in Egypt. Even that information is eventually lost due to erosion by nature or due to loss of the ability to translate the information. I have not seen much of our modern information carved into stone. Obviously books could easily burn or deteriorate quickly if they get wet. This could mean that our modern advances are even more at risk. Imagine a world where there are CDs, DVDs, USB keys, or other storage devices that we cannot or no longer know how to read. This could happen if there were an Electromagnetic Pulse that destroyed the devices that could read or display the information.
I recommend that we store important information in DNA. It is interesting that there is a creature that has many chromosomes, for example-
It would be interesting to encode our useful information and store it in a creatures code, especially if the creature was everywhere, reproduced easily, and was hardy. Using a method similar to this could save our data for a long time into the future. To make certain it could be easily extracted, it should also be encoded in a way to be more easily decoded. One method could be that the information makes the creature move in patterns that display the information in words, or eat out wood in grooves that could be read directly.
