Should Taj Mahal Be Demolished?

in #india6 years ago (edited)

The 17th century UNESCO World Heritage monument Taj Mahal is the only monument in India that is credited as the seven wonders of the world. But recently, it has been in news for all the wrong reasons.

Pro Hindu Chief Minister of the Uttar Pradesh State has earlier tried to distance from this monument citing its Islamic origins. Taj Mahal was also not given any place in Uttar Pradesh's Tourism souvenir.

To add to this, last week the Supreme Court of India told the Government to either demolish the Taj Mahal or restore it. The apex court judges were expressing their utter displeasure on the discolouring of the monument due to pollution and insect dung. The sparkling white marble has turned yellowish now. The government couldn't even come up with any vision document for preserving this beauty. So the Court expressed its disgust and annoyance by telling to shut down the monument or demolish it if it can not protect it.

A few months back, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has capped the number of Indian tourists to 40,000 per day though foreign tourists numbers has no restriction. Later ASI also restricted the entry for only 3 hours.

But in spite of all these, Government doesn't seem to have any concrete plan to extend the predicted 400 years life of this monument.

Now tourism ministry has put up the Taj in its "Adopt-A-Monument" scheme to entrust its maintenance and restoration to some Monument Mitra ( a private company / PSU or NGO). So far it has found no takers.

Personally, I feel Taj Mahal is too overrated in India. Although India is identified with Taj Mahal & Gandhi as its face, there are several better things than these. During the war threat, this whole monument is safeguarded by masking it to hide it from enemy's visibility.

However, I won't support demolishing it completely but it should be closed to public until it is completely restored and its vicinity is safe from pollution, acid rain etc. There are several beautiful spots to be explored for the touristts. Why not promote them too? What do you say?

Great concern showed for Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is the glory or (shaan) of our India which is incredible.

Thanks @xyzashu for sharing this post. ☺

Regardless of religion, this has already been a structure that made its mark and known all over. I hope they can continue to maintain it and restore whatever needs to be restored. The adopt scheme is a good idea as long as it is not going to be corrupted.

It is also nice to promote other beautiful spots but that would be open to destruction as well if not managed properly.

Present government is busy with those issues which are dividing our society. They have no idea what great things are. They are just behaving like an angry bull. Taj Mahal is a beautiful building which should be keep safe.
