Russian University to Use Blockchain To Store Diploma Records

Blockchain is becoming more and more popular as people in virtually every industry start to recognize its value. Now a university in Russia is turning to the technology to help store diploma records.

The Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation said in a June 26th statement how they used distributed ledger technology to record diplomas issued in the last 10 years. The school says diplomas have been encrypted with the SHA-256 algorithm.

The educational institution says employers will be able to verify the authenticity of a diploma starting September 2018. Development team members say the process will be user-friendly and convenient.

Many universities across the world have started to incorporate blockchain technology into their curriculums, but a couple of schools are also using it to verify diplomas.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnered with a Cambridge software company to give students the ability to store their diplomas in a blockchain wallet. The pilot program in 2017 was said to be a success, and now all graduates from June 2018 onward will have access to the wallet. Officials hope the endeavor will let potential employers verify records with students instead of calling the university.

Learning Machine also teamed up with Southern New Hampshire University’s College for America to award students with diplomas based on blockchain technology. The Blockcert credentials can be linked and verified with any blockchain and can be shared with people on platforms like LinkedIn.
