Pakistan is extensively preparing to export subsidized sugar in India. In Pakistan, this sugar season has produced more sugar. In view of this, the Pakistani government has announced the subsidy on exports of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar. The Indian Food Ministry's official has said that if Pakistan gives subsidized sugar, then India can increase import duty. At present, sugar is imported in India by 50 percent import duty.
PM Narendra Modi has set a target to double the income of the farmers of the country by 2022. If Chinese-subsidized sugar comes in, the price of sugar in the country can be affected. In such a situation, the Government has a look at Pakistan's activities. An official from the news agency Cogencis has said that India is looking at the whole issue. According to this official, it does not appear to be that it is possible to import sugar from Pakistan at this rate, but if this happens then we can consider increasing import duty. According to another official, it does not seem that the import of sugar after 50 percent import duty from Pakistan will prove beneficial in Punjab too.
