Investigation - The Sexual Abuse of Children in Custodial Institutions - Public Hearing - Day 9

Welcome back and as you may have already noticed, there was no live feed yesterday. This was because Thursday's hearing was a preliminary and they are not televised. Today we resume usual service and return to the live public sessions.

If you missed Wednesday's live feed, then I would suggest you take a listen and in particular to a lady named Sharron Rollinson(Begins at 1hr14mins), who gave some of the most shocking evidence I have heard in a while.

This part of the investigation has centered around a secure unit named Medway and Sharron was employed there for around a year. In this time she was alerted to a staff member who had been seen holding hands and sneaking around with one young boy. The same staff-member was also recorded striking one of the children in what Sharron described as "a completely unprovoked assault". Sharron also witnessed another staff member informing co-workers where the camera blind-spots were, so you could assault the children. But worst of all was when Mrs Rollinson told the inquiry panel of how EVERY secure unit in England had been built to the same design and this design had included the installment of "viewing-hatches" in every child's shower room. Sharron goes on to say that the existence of these spy-holes is not common knowledge.

By the time Sharron had finished her testimony, I felt very sorry for this lady. Here was someone trying to do the right thing, someone who respected the responsibility she had and really wanted to offer these forgotten children a better kind of life. But as happens all too often these days, Sharron's complaints were ignored or classed as unimportant. Even after Sharon had found out about the staff-member having relations with a young boy, she was shocked to discover that the unit manager had quashed the case and lifted the employee's suspension, allowing her to come back to work at the secure unit.

All in all, there wasn't much good news or hope for any other secure units around the UK and as our government are now planning on privatising this public service, I fear thing will only get worse and profit will become even more important, rather than the rehabilitation of the children.

We are in a sad state of affairs, here in the UK, but we plod on regardless in the hope for change. For now all I can offer you is another portion of evidence to back-up these claims.
