Turf houses in Northen Iceland

in #iceland6 years ago (edited)

This collection of turf houses in Iceland is located in Glaumbaer in Northern Iceland at Skagafjorur.
Since the Viking Age, people lived in such turf houses in Iceland. In these turf houses in Glaumbaer it lived people until 1947. Then these houses became a museum, and today these houses are widely visited by tourists.
This farm with its buildings dates back to the mid-eighteenth century.
When the Vikings came to Iceland for more than 1000 years, there was not much forest in Iceland. Therefore, they could not build houses of wood or timber. These turf houses are like the house the Vikings lived in Iceland. Everyone lived in such dwellings, rich and poor.
After I have been inside these houses, I would think they would be warm and warm in the wind and cold weather.
The pictures from inside show how people lived in these houses until just after the Second World War. On the second floor, the walls are of wood. In my next posting, I will show more pictures on the second floor.
