WTF ? What is going on there {Venezuela} ?
I'm not ignorant. Actually not too much. At least that's what I want to think for myself. But there are major events worldwide that fail to be in mass-media (our mass-media).
Like there is HELL in Venezuela right now !
You know Venezuela,
Oil exports account for over 96 percent of its export earnings.
therefore
Price controls and a chaotic exchange rate system have resulted in severe shortages of food and other basic necessities.
But from that to this:
The scarcity of basic food items and medicines has become a national calamity.
"Within a year they're going to run out of money" > the whole country, not people. The WHOLE COUNTRY.
I know, It's a dire situation and ironic for a country that sits on the world's largest oil reserves.
About the people and the food:
- supplies are so limited that CNN recently found a 1 kg bag of dried pasta selling for an astronomical 200 times its official price in Caracas.
- There's hardly ever fresh milk on the shelves. The same for powdered milk, which can sell on the black market for 100 times its official price. We found milk being sold for 7,000 bolivares -- more than $700 at the official currency exchange rate, though if you have U.S. dollars you can exchange them on the black market at vastly more favorable rates, perhaps getting 1,000 bolivares to the dollar.
"Best case scenario, I can get a kilo of chicken, a kilo of meat and one bag of rice and one of corn flour on my salary. That's it."
"I stand in line waiting for the regulated products and by the time my number is up there is nothing left."
"I've been looking for food all day today. This morning I found four bottles of oil in one place, bar of soap in another and laundry detergent in another. Hoping to find some corn flour now."
I know, I know. There are many problems in the world. All around the world.
But we are a community. One made of people. Real people. It's not limited to US or Europe or Asia. It's worldwide.
Can we:
- open a discussion/topic about this ?
- be more informed about this (or other catastrophes around the world) ?
- actually do something ? I saw this site. Should we give it a try ?
- engage ourselves in at least one awareness movement ?
- what can be done ? We can't help an entire country, but we can prioritize our help to focus in some urgent areas.
Because we are people. And humanity is not only a word. Is what makes us humans.
I personally donate to humanitarian causes (catastrophic events), international investigative journalist association or people that I admire and I consume their work (writers, bloggers, youtubers), wikipedia.
I just want to know more about the crisis in Venezuela and to see if we can do something. Anything.
Please, can we start a discussion?
By the way, I'm from Eastern Europe.

Venezuela: Where flour, pasta and milk can cost a month's pay
I upvote U
I'm from Venezuela, i could tell you everything thats going on in here. One of the worst things here is the inflation and the salary. 15$ a month of work, which you can spend in 1 day buying a dinner
Wow. It's unthinkable. And I'm from Eastern Europe (I know what scarcity is ). I want to help.
I hope this post reach more people, thank you
