Making do and Mending. Repairing a Hand Held Fan.

in #howto5 years ago

I never went to university, but I feel like now my eldest going, the whole family is getting the broke uni student experience. We're pulling out all the stops when it comes to being frugal, so I've been doing a fair bit of mending recently. If you can fix it, then no purchase is necessary. Today the plastic pin on my daughter's fan broke. It's a well used item, come summer, so it was worth fixing.

After a little thought, I realised that a bamboo skewer could be the perfect fit and a bit more thinking brought a solution to holding it in place. A quick ferret through the shed and I'd gathered together the tools for the job. Sometimes there is a use to hoarding and our hoard of wire was just the thing to hold the new pin in place.

Making a groove around the skewer created a seat for the wire so it didn't slide off. Being bamboo a kitchen knife was all I needed to carve this groove.

Then it was a case of cutting and twisting the wire in place with pliers and filing down any sharp edges.

One fan back in use.

Nice you were able to find a way to minimize cost and also become creative at the same time.

Sometimes we look down on minimal things that we should have spent a little hour on to work on them and end up amending them. These menal things might accumulate on the long run and cost us much.

They do accumulate, don't they. Often we throw it and just buy a new one, because it's cheap enough, but even if it's just cents, it's still wasted cents if it didn't need to be spent. As the saying goes, a penny saved is a penny earnt. We are also starting to realise that the cost is more than just money out of our pocket. It's the cost of the resources and energy used and the cost of our ever increasing wastage.

Definitely they do. One good thing about it is that they make you think in a productive and conservative way.

Now all we need is hot weather!!!

Should only have to wait a few months. :D

This just made my heart smile! Such a graceful and clever repair job too - well done you!!

@ecoTrain

Thank you.
I was initially thinking of leaving it to hubby, to see what he suggested, but he wouldn't have been happy about doing it and it would have probably been something very basic and not very attractive. Then I realised I could probably do something myself, just as well.
