Make Your Own Super-charged Cold Brew

Having coffee in the morning is a sure way to jumpstart your productivity and wake up. For many, it's a ritual to drink coffee at least once per day, but in my case, my cup is around the size of the mason jar below. Right now in most reaches of the globe, it's blistering hot and nobody wants to drink near boiling liquids while they sweat to death, right? So why not try replacing your hot coffee routine with a jar of delicious cold-brewed coffee? I like to make a batch in the afternoon and steep it overnight, so it can be consumed fresh the next morning. Cold brewing your coffee has some benefits, such as robust flavor and higher caffeine potency. This makes it perfect for diluting with ice cubes, keeping your coffee colder for longer.

Enough blabbering! Here's how you do it!

Assemble Materials

  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups of fresh, whole coffee beans
  • an 8 cup mason jar
  • 8 cups of cold, filtered water
  • a coffee grinding apparatus
  • a bowl
  • coffee filters
  • something to filter coffee into

Measure coffee beans

Measure out about 1 cup of whole coffee beans. This is a good amount to bring out the subtle flavors. Use more if you prefer a stronger cup. We brewed some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee in this batch. I'd describe the taste as smooth, chocolatey "blackberry" coffee. Reminds me of some Sumatran coffees that I've tried.

Grind coffee beans

Grind the beans to a medium coarseness. It took about 3 separate grinds to process 1 cup of coffee beans in our grinder, keep your jar handy so you can put your ground coffee in it.

Mix ground coffee and water

We used a pitcher of filtered water to fill up the jar. After the water is added, give it a good shake to disperse it. This jar nets about 7 cups of coffee.

Steep and refrigerate

Let it chill and steep for about 12 hours. If you haven't been already, consider keeping your beans in a freezer. Doing so will make the beans more dense, improving extraction. This improves the flavor, according to researchers at the University of Bath.

Filter coffee

The next step is to separate the coffee grounds from the bean water. This is where you might need to get crafty. You'll need to find something that can hold a filter. If you have a drip coffee maker, you could just manually pour coffee into the filter on it. We used a Chemex, and it took about 3-4 filters to get through it all because these are known to clog unless the coffee is coarser, due to the pointed cone shape of the filter.

Prepare and serve

I prefer it black, neat or over ice. Add your cream, sugar, or whatever else you may like. My mom uses cinnamon in hers. I've even heard of people using butter, although I haven't tried that variety.

Thank each and every one of you for reading! We hope that you enjoyed our tutorial as much as we loved making it and drinking the outcome and that your coffee making goes beautifully each and every time that you make it! STEEM ON!!!

The first step, before chilling, you are adding hot or cold water?

Hey @onceuponatime. Excellent question! I'll have @matt-a revise the post to discuss the water temperature.

We added room temperature water. Colder is better, I would think.

Next: coldbrew cocktails!!!

Just add whiskey.

Man, that looks amazing! I love myself a nice ice coffee now and then, but this got me all jittery just looking at it.
Definitely trying it! :)

Thank you! A lot of people don't like the thought of cold coffee . . . until they try it the right way! This is a total game changer in the Summer months. As long as you keep it sealed up in the jar and in the fridge, it'll taste fresh for a LONG time. That's all thanks to the air tight seal of Mason jars. Good luck with it! Glad you enjoyed the post.

12 hours steeping!? How strong is the coffee at that point? That must be like injecting cocaine into your eyeballs.

This mental image made me giggle. And I'm craving some inter-corneal coffee injections now.

Yup! Where there's no heat being applied to the coffee grounds, extracting the good stuff takes quite a bit longer. And yes, you hit the nail on the head, it's totally on par with eye-vein-IV'ing hahaha.

I'm totally trying this. I look forward to vibrating my way through my day.

This really was a fantastic batch. Next time, I'm going to try it with home roasted beans like @jaycobbell described in this post.
