How did I remove the write protection from the usb flash drive

in #howto7 years ago (edited)

My friend works in an analytical laboratory, in which they installed new equipment from Agilent Technologies. Along with the equipment came a few USB flash drives, which contained information about advertising and user instructions. Information from them was copied and saved. Then it was found that the flash drive works only in read mode and there is no write capability. I was asked to deal with this problem, because I wanted to use the drives for their intended use.
And so, we have a USB 2.0 flash drive, with a capacity of 32 GB.

The first step is to find out which controller it is on and what type of memory is used. For this, I used the free program Flash Drive Information Extractor, the latest version of which can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

In the future, I used googles to find a program that could remove the write protection and format the flash memory. The main thing is that the program must have the support of this controller. And such a program was found, the SMI Mass Product Tool, from the manufacturer Silicon Motion.

After starting the program, you first need to press the button "Scan USB", then the drive will appear in the cage number one. Then "Start", it will perform a complete erasure of memory. If necessary, you can set different parameters in the "Settling" menu.
Clicking on the button one, you can see information about the drive.

This completes the work, the write protection is removed :)
