Homesteadphotography: Who's In My Sunflowers?
@knowledge-seeker's newest homesteading photography contest is about the homestead wildlife. I have never entered the contest before and I remembered snapping this picture last summer one afternoon as I was checking my herb garden.
I had never seen such a large grasshopper in my life. He, or she, measured about four inches in length. It was on my dwarf sunflowers enjoying the summer sunshine.
Interesting Facts About Grasshoppers
- They have six legs, two pairs of wings and two antennae
- There are over 11,000 different varieties/species across the globe
- They use the long antennae to make sense of their surroundings.
- They have six jointed legs
- They are herbivores; which means they eat plant matter
- The female lays an egg pod which can have a couple of dozen grasshopper eggs
- Baby grasshoppers are known as nymphs

Growing up in Texas, we had Jumbo Grasshoppers. Picture a 6"-8" grasshopper capable of cracking a windshield! Eyes so big you could tell if they were making eye contact with you! I played with them all the time when I was a kid!
Wholly Schmolly! Now those were BIG grasshoppers!
