Steemit HomesteadingChallenge #7 - Share a homestead resolution for 2018!

Share a homestead resolution for 2018! (1).jpg

My Homestead Resolution Is:

To eat fruits and veggies ENTIRELY from our property, for a full month (likely over the summer).

There are several reasons to do this.
*To make sure we're growing the right things - the best garden is garden you're willing to consume!

*To maximize our ROI, the return on investment. We've put money, time, energy into cultivating spaces that will nourish us. We've already reaped the reward of exercise from taking care of the garden. We get vitamin D from being out on the sunshine. We connect in harmony with nature when our feet touch the earth, when our hands are covered with soil. Now put all that work back in your damned mouth!

*To encourage creativity with meals. We won't be able to grow the assortment that the grocer or farmer's market will offer (at least not immediately) so we'll learn how to make thirteen meals out of squash, versus just the three we might fall back to because they're easy or familiar.

*This will also kick me in the butt to put more work into the compost pile!

So yeah, once we pick a month, progress and updates will be posted here - yay, so exciting!!!!

I look forward to seeing your submissions!

This is great! Best wishes to you! It gets easier every year. Last year we did better than the year before. This winter a lot of our meals are stuff we grew or local game! Makes me want to put even more away next year. It’s a great way to feel abundant.

thank you! i'm learning to make small goals that are attainable and build upon them - and like you said, be better than the year before.

life is definitely flush with abundance :D

This is a great resolution! I would love to work up to producing 80% of my food on the homestead. This is a really good starting point to see what that would look like.

thanks, and very true - that other 20% can go to meat, grains, and/or store bought supplies. you might need to slow down on coffee consumption though!

it's also a good, health-focused goal. cutting out crap like refined sugar will also make it easier!

Mine would be to do better at our fall crops, Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage ect.
Good luck friend!

thank you, friend - and good luck back. fall & winter crops can be challenging. i could focus more on them as well!

Yes, being more sustainable is a great goal to have.
I'm hoping one day to be able to NOT have to go to the grocery store.

i'd love to get there as well. not sure if i can give up coconut & almond milk just yet (and making them is not anything i'm interested in).

Happy New Year!
I love your resolutions! One of our overall goals for our homestead is to be self-sustaining. I would love to be able to can and preserve much of our garden this coming fall to avoid having to purchase manufactured goods from the grocery store. I look forward to following your resolution in the coming summer months! Warm wishes from our homestead to yours :)

happy 2018, friend! we will enjoy our self-sustaining journey in good company - best of luck and we look forward to learning from y'all.

This is a great goal. Growing to feed ourselves is very important in the time we live in now. Great Job!

it is so very important, indeed. i'd like to think that my granma would be proud - she had THE BEST garden!

This is a fabulous goal! What veggies will you add to what you've grown in the past?

thank you! i am going to try eggplant again. two seeds last year grew & flowered, but never set fruit. i also want to try snap peas, as it's a good snack to have on hand for hungry kids. nasturtium. possibly onions and garlic - mine have never survived, and it's frustrating!

Excellent point and spot on advice! I need to follow this myself and totally appreciate the reminder.
