Resuming duties

in #homesteading5 years ago

We’ve had the worst when it comes to this blaze of heat. We’ll still be in the 100F for a while but it slowly starts to decrease and by next week we’re back to 70-ish. It didn’t cool off, it was the hottest night on record. I have to admit I secretly enjoyed the weatherman being at a loss of words.
Right now I’m hoping for rain.

Chores are about to resume. There are plenty of weeds that need to be taken care of and I spotted a couple of tomatoes that are nearly ready.

The peas are drying but there are a couple more varieties that still need to be harvested. It is an old custom to use a drying rack like this, as far as I know it only has a native name so I don’t know if you have a name for it in your part of the world.

It is basically four sticks making a pyramid structure and then four horizontal sticks. You wrap the plants around the structure and start from the horizontal sticks and work your way up.

The structure allows for airflow inside and out, preventing mold and allows the peas or beans to dry. You put a tarp on top to guide the rain to the outside of the stack.
This structure is very solid and can take a good storm.

We’ve got two types of english pea but one of them we didn’t like so those whole plants will be going to the pigs and goats. The other we will save seed from by leaving the last pods to ripe and then dry them on a rack like shown above. We have about five species of native grey peas and then several types of beans but they are not quite ready yet.

At least six different varieties of beans are growing here

We’ve also got a couple types of green beans. Most varieties came from our own country however this beautiful winged bean came from baker creek.
