Putting Up Our Yurt On The Pirate Homestead
In 2015 we bought a Yurt to live in and did so for ten months. But when Wench became pregnant with our daughter we thought that maybe having running water and electricity would be a good idea.
2015, Central Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. The first time we had our Yurt up and livable.
For two years our Yurt has been in storage.
Now that we have a deck constructed we finally freed it from the darkness of a shipping container.
Our Yurt is six metres in diameter. Each of these tape measures is set at three metres.
The deck was constructed with old pallets that we sourced for free. It just cost us some petrol to get them. And also some black plastic to stop rising damp and 1000 screws (with some leftover for other projects).
Total cost = roughly $220NZD
That is about $160USD or £116GBP
Now to get the Yurt up. We did put out the call for volunteers to come and help us but sadly got no bites. When we put it up in 2015 we had four people but this time it was just two...and a tiny bit.
First the two halves of the Khanna (walls lattices) and door are connected together.
Next its time to get up a ladder. One person must hold the Ring over their head and guide the Uni (roof spars) into the holes. The other person slots the other end of the Uni into the wire loop that runs around the top of the Khanna.
Once you get at least six of the Uni in place the Ring wont fall down so long as they are evenly spaced.
Capt'n's eye view.
Pose for the camera and say 'Arrrr'.
We had some help as mentioned above. But she wasn't tall enough to reach the 'Biderwebs' that needed cleaning from the Ring and Uni.

Once the Uni are all in place it's time for the wall lining to be hung from the wire loop around the top of the Khanna.
With the outer canvas walls and roof liner/insulation on it looks a bit like a heavily iced fruit cake.
Then it is just the matter of getting the very heavy canvas roof up and over before tying everything down.
Phew. Not a bad effort. It took the two.two of us about four hours from start to finish.
Of course, there was a bit of swearing (we are Pirates) and the odd scratch or five.
Literally blood, sweat and some tears (from the two year old).
Now we will work on tidying up the outside, finishing the front of the deck and kitting out the inside for guests.
Watch this space!
Hmm... This is the second "living in a yurt" post I've seen this week.
Where was the other one? They are great to live in. But this time we will be hosting Airbnb'ers and other guests rather than living in it ourselves.
I didn't even know what a yurt was until I came on steemit.
