Life on the Farm | 3

Today september 6th 2017 we began the afternoon with a quiet dreary bus ride. When we got to the farm Ian read a poem by william berry that was based on his perception of having a similar rainy day. Instead of breaking up into groups we all went together to the main garden to harvest some banana peppers, basil, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini. It was nice to not split up and work together with everyone as a group and talk with some other people that I hadn't gotten a chance to meet or work with from week one and two.

When we finished harvesting we went to the main headquarters and unloaded the crops. After that we went to the fodder field and split up, one group to get the tomatoes that were outside and then another group to get the blackberries and raspberries. Next we went to harvest the brassica crops.

The best part was learning how to properly harvest them and the most efficient way to do it if you needed to move quickly by wearing a band on your wrist and moving each leaf you pull off into that hand when you get a decent size bundle you can quickly band it with one from your wrist and keep moving.

I mostly am growing these kinds of plants in my garden at home and I didn't know how to properly harvest, it's worth noting when harvesting them to pull it as close to the stem as possible. After that we went to the greenhouse and it was cool to learn about how blight works and some of the positives and negatives to growing tomatoes in greenhouses. To wrap it up we ended by visiting the pigs.
