Our Chicken Was Blind, But Now It Can See - Homesteading At Its Best!
One of our brand new chicken was blind, but now she can see - Watch the video to see her look around at the world for the very first time in her life
Chicken
About three weeks ago we decided we wanted some chickens.
We had a double agenda: while we could be eating fresh eggs, the chickens could feast on all the slugs that passed by them on their way to my vegetable garden.
So we went to the market and came home with three adorable little cuties. The black one felt right at home, as you can see :-)
Worried
After two days, we started to worry: the ginger chicken wouldn't move. She just sat there, silently - until we picked her up to put her in the chicken house at night. Was she sick? We really didn't know.
The Ultimate Tip
On the third day, a friend of ours passed by. He made a comment about the huge ball of feathers the chickens had on their head.
That's when we realized... she couldn't see. Her eyes were completely covered by her feathers.
5 minutes and one scissor late, it appeared our diagnosis had been right.
The way she moved her head, from left to right, up and down was a clear indication that the poor thing had never seen anything else than her own feathers during her entire life.
That first moment was so adorable - simply watch the video, and I'm convinced you will agree.
After that day, she started acting just like the other two - although I must admit she is a bit slow, and it took her a while to understand that she had to go into the chicken house at night.
We were just glad it wasn't any worse than only a couple of feathers.

What kind of chickens are those? I've only seen that type at county fairs. Is that breed better for eggs? What made you choose that type? (Besides how nifty they look lol.)
These are paduan hens

They don't lay a lot of eggs - and the eggs are tiny.
We basically chose them because they looked funny, lol
Thank you for the informative link. I hope to start creating my own small modern homestead in the next 5 years with my boyfriend, and we plan on having some chickens roaming around.
These are real quiet ones (we don’t have a rooster), and quite easy-going.
I would really recommend them :0)
Congrats on finding a simple solution to your problem.
Thanks. I was glad it was this simple :-)
So cute! She absolutely couldn't get enough of seeing things, could she?! Thanks for sharing!
She didn’t know where she had to look first. So incredibly funny :0)
How fantastic! Lucky your friend happened by, though you'd probably have got there eventually. Maybe she'll speed up as she gains confidence - a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for posting - truly heartwarming.
She's still a bit slow - but definitely more active than before :0)
