My Love of Trees versus our need for Water

in #homesteading6 years ago

Hola Fellow Steemians! I am a self confessed 'tree lover and hugger'... and I wasn't expecting that to become a challenge in our new off-grid life! I naively thought we'll move in... love the land and everything will be hunky dory.

Well... it's not quite been like that! When we moved in almost 6 weeks ago, there was no water system plumbed into the house, so we were having to start from scratch. We have the right to take 1 hour of water a week from the 'acequia' channel that brings water down off the Sierra Nevada mountains and through our land, but the big problem is that the acequia stops for up to 4 months over the summer. So whatever our choices, it would have to involve building a large enough water deposit to tide us through the dry hot Spanish summer.

We had 2 months left in our rental before moving into our wee off-grid kingdom and most of that was spent getting quotes, more quotes, more opinions, having night terrors at the costs, getting our heads round incomprehensible bureaucracy and coping with even more opinions on the best way to bring running water into our house. None of it was made any easier by the fact that the last part of our track is not passable for larger trucks to bring in the considerable amounts of building materials needed.

To cut a long story short... we found an angel of a builder who made everything possible... and spoke English... and was an absolute star. He was innovative and helpful... which was just as well as there was a rather lovely mature olive tree where the water deposit had to be built. And this was a huge issue for me.

Cue, protest, tears and heartbreak.

It wasn't a protest I was going to win, but here's where it gets interesting.

It turned out that the builder's father used to be a lumberjack and was now totally averse to any pruning or felling of trees. This meant that he totally understood where I was coming from.. and immediately came on side.

We were going to save the tree. Yes, she would have to have her branches pruned and she would be uprooted... but she would be relocated to a special spot nearby.

HALLELUJAH!

I was over the moon. In the run up to the big day, I began tuning in energetically to the tree and sending her messages of love and telling her what was going to happen. I asked her to pull her energy back into her trunk and to trust me. Over those days I placed my hands on her trunk, felt her presence... felt rushes of energy come from her and I felt a deep connection between us. As an empath I found it all hugely emotional but also incredible to feel the life force of this special tree.

The day of her move came and I had butterflies in my stomach and a lump in my throat. Everyone was under strict instructions that she was to be relocated and not felled. Some of the builders saw me as a nuisance and some as just weird... but I didn't care. As her branches were cut back, I actually felt a relief flood through me and a sense of everything being more than ok. I admit that I couldn't watch her being taken out of the ground... but she was laid on her side further along the terrace to await her new home while the foundations were built.

We had to wait a few days before the Bobcat driver came back so I went every day and visited her, laying my hands on her trunk and I was initially worried that I felt so little life force compared to before. It felt like she'd moved into a state of limbo. I was reassured by local friends that olive trees are amazingly hardy and that a few days out of the ground wouldn't be a problem. It was more my emotions that were the problem!

And then the day of her relocation came! We picked a spot near my caravan office on the terrace near other olive trees and there she was planted and secured and well and truly watered. I commandeered all the big jerry cans of water that had been collected for the concrete and water was pooled around her trunk and we were under strict instructions to keep the water coming.

She didn't look great... the pruning had been way too harsh for my liking... it still hurts when I see her... but most importantly, I could feel her life force coming back.

Today she stands overlooking our open view and I've laid crystals around her trunk to help her recover.

I've used natural pieces and hearts of rose quartz and clear quartz points to help empower and support her with love.

Rose quartz is the stone of unconditional love and peace... and clear quartz is a power house for magnifying energy and protection.

You may think I over reacted... you may think I'm overly sentimental... or you may just feel the love... either way... I hope you've enjoyed hearing about this special tree and our quest to have running water in our home.

I have a lot to learn about tree husbandry and how we will best take care of the 80+ olive trees now under our charge. We hope to harvest the trees for olive oil in the future so I know I am going to have to 'toughen up' when it's time to prune them back and encourage new growth.

In the meantime... tomorrow is a big day... it's the day of our water deposit finally being connected to the house and of seeing if that shower will actually work!

Wishing you all you lovely Steemians a wonderful evening!

Love,

Sally xx

Great work on taking such good care of your olive tree and I know how you must have been feeling. I am sure it will turn into the happiest and most productive of all to show it’s appreciation too.

The issue of never enough water here in Spain makes us creative too - are you recycling all your grey water to the garden and using deep mulch techniques around your plants to conserve and draw water from the atmosphere? I wish you a wonderful weekend ! ❤️🍀🦋🌈🌴

Thank you @sallybeth23! The answer is yes... we will be! My partner is the one doing the research and learning and setting things up while I'm the breadwinner with my healing work. As of today we have running water in the house and we have water management in place and we will be setting up composting and mulching... and probably feeling like the city slickers that we are, for quite a while longer! So much to learn and loving it! Have a great weekend too! :) xx

I just dropped a blessing on this lovely tree. The glyph should last until sunrise, and then it will really kick in. Does it have a name that I can use? (makes it easier, overall...)

Thank you so much @yestermorrow! I named her (rather obviously) Olive :) She is special and I really appreciate your blessing.... xx

Oh wow..congratz to living totally offgrid now!

What do you mean by having night terror btw? Like...nightmares? Cuz of moving? I guess it's part of doing big steps in life.

Wow...what a life turnaround for the lumberjack guy! Good for you that u found such guy! And for the tree as well hah :D

I'm windering whether I'll also turn 180 degrees and will start hating computers in 30 years :D

Hmm, laying the crystals around are kinda too much for me. At least...I mean, I believe in energy and all that stuff, but I feel people who start doing these "extremes" just go down the rabbithole quite often. Altho crystals might work.

Cool story either way! Salute to tree saver! :)

Thanks @matkodurko! It really is great to be living off grid! We still have stresses and worries that have kept us awake at night... but it is such a better way to live than being slaves to a system and trapped in a life that doesn't bring you happiness:) We still have so much to learn and I'm pretty sure the learning will never end! I don't think I'll ever hate the computer... although I do need more and more time away from the internet now... but I am loving Steemit!
Haha... I can understand why laying the crystals round the tree might be a bit too much for you! Many years ago I would have laughed if someone had suggested that to me... but when you start learning about energy and working with energy as I do as a healer, then it doesn't seem so mad after all. I'm pretty grounded and tend to stay clear of the extremes! Thanks for your reply and great to meet you! :)

Shit haha Im being slave to a system and trapped in a life as well but kinda enjoy it a lot :D I guess it comes to whether person likes the job or not. But yeah, Im fresh of university sooo I'm still full of ideals and youth haha, wondering how long will it take me to realize this aint that much fun :D

That was very touching story, I can imagine how you did feel when the decision was made for the relocation was made and the process has been started. The trees like you say yourself, may survive that well but you never know sometimes you may make more damage rather then good for the tree. I believe in that case it would be a great disaster for you especially for your soul and mind. I am glad that the guys who help you with that were very understandable and it seems like everything went good. I wish you and your Olive tree all the best, hopefully the shock of new place will settle soon and your tree will get new energy soon.

What a great post and happy you got a curie. Your land is gorgeous, your olive tree is so lovely and looks so good in her new spot. I am an empath and huge lover of trees as well, it is so understandable your attachment from my perspective and you explained your experience very well. She looks great and those crystals must be making her very happy, I would suggest a few more things: talk to her (even telepathically) as you must be doing, sing to her, if you have a drum then drum to her, as a Native American medicine woman (in training) I would blow sage on her and thanking Mother Earth for the transition. Spread some tobacco around in thankfulness to Spirit for the successful move, and hold a ceremony for her that says welcome to your new home and that she is loved. I realize you may be saying these things already but these are things I do. Sharing your energy with her as you stated is wonderful, by placing your hands on her and communicating. Thank you for sharing your love with us on steemit, this was a great read for me and touched my soul.
Yours,
Eagle spirit
