Homesteading Vlog | How To Graft Part 1 - Whip Graft

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

In this How To Series, we will walk you through the 3 most common methods of grafting starting with the whip graft! In Part 2, we'll share on Kerf grafts and Part 3 on bark inlay. We'll also share when is best to use each of these grafts and the positives and negatives and more in a comprehensive post to end the series!

If you're just checking out our series on grafting, make sure to watch our Intro to Grafting Video :) here.

Spring is here, the sap is rising and the Earth is looking greener! Trees are waking up and this means it's a great time to graft. Some trees like to be grafted during dormancy, but many prefer receiving a graft once spring growth has begun.

In this How To Video, I go over one of the simplest grafting techniques known as the whip graft. This method uses small diameter rootstock and scion, and is as basic as it gets. It can be done in the field or indoors if you have potted seedlings. Whip grafting entails making slaned cuts on both scion and rootstock and lining up the cambium (layer just under the bark) before sealing the union with grafting tape (a biodegradable film).

I explain and demonstrate this technique using a wild plum seedling rootstock that we planted last year. With a few simple tools and little investment, you too can reap the benefits of grafting such as delicious fruit, increased genetic diversity and an economical way to grow lots of fruit. Future videos will outline the kerf and bark inlays graft for option using larger diameter rootstock.

Feel free to ask questions! It's really quite easy!

Thanks for watching :)
