Eggsperiences Series #2 - Twin Chickens?
Another surprise
Can you see it?
Here it is again close up and circled...
Twins
At first I thought
this could have been twin chicks if we let it be
But I'm not an eggspert so here we go again from Incredible Eggcyclopedia
This makes me think, it CAN be twins. But from Backyard Chickens, it is rare. Here's the thread.
2 for 1
It's a good deal for a big family to have a double-yolker hen. We really enjoyed gathering eggs. We can tell which one is the double-yolk because of it's size.
For a one-egg scrambled egg we have more to eat. One sunny-side up, you get 2! Make a mayo, adjust your oil!
It didn't last very long though.
One day while the ladies were out and about free-ranging, we heard some cackling. That's normal, they are some loud ladies. Something spooked the ladies? They are easily spooked.
We didn't see anything suspicious so we went on throughout the day. Until it's time to put them up. Counted them and realized we're missing one.
Gone
Yes, one of the Australorp ladies are gone and we searched through the woods and neighborhood and can't find her. No black feathers or sign of struggle.
Since that day, we stopped having the BIG double-yolk egg.
Our children @futurefarmers, @iamstan and I were devastated. Why does losing a hen that sudden affect us?
What's worse, we didn't know what kind of predator got her.
Here is series #1 - a post on blood-spotted egg yolk if you missed it.

Double yolker! I had laying hens many years ago and the older they got the more double yolkers they laid. It is always fun to see them though.
