Off Grid Herb Drying! No Electricity or Dehydrator Required.

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

Drying your homegrown herbs does not need to be complicated and it does not require a dehydrator OR electricity. Even if you are off grid, you can dry homegrown herbs! Sarah takes you in to the herb garden to cut some herbs and then shows you how to bundle herbs to hang dry them in the house.

I have seen the hanging technique done by many people; just never been sure of myself enough to attempt.

I have even seen people (on YT videos) who use their parked vehicle and the sun to dehydrate herbs and vegetables.
Maybe one day I will bypass my dehydrator and hang the herbs throughout the utility room.

Drying in the car window sounds like a good idea. Might help keep the temperature down in the car too!

Great video!

Many homesteaders don't know how easy saving herbs can be.

Thanks!

I did this with a huge basil 'Lettuce Leaf' variety that I grew. I used an old tomato cage and hung cuttings in between the metal supports, then hung that from the ceiling.

Then I threw them in my Vitamix blender after 2-3 weeks and created basil powder. I have enough to last me months now :)

Wonderful! I love my dehydrator, sometimes I forget it taste better dried the old fashion way. Inspiring, thank you for the post.

hell yea, im so looking forward to goin off the grid too. i wish more people were doing this and open to this revolution. govt is just stealing our money and the food in the shelfs are just fillers and crap

Wow...
What a big knowledge I gained from ur post @livingtraditions thanks for sharing this

Very useful info and easy to do!

Suggestion for identifying the dried version -> write the name of the herb on the clothespin with a marker or use a twist-tie to attach a small label.

Thanks for the how-to!

Thanks for sharing.. I've tried air drying chillis in my walk in pantry (not with a lot of luck) have so many excess herbs I will give this a go!

Very nice! I love it!
