When growing your own produce...
... things don't always go according to your plan. Especially when there's kids involved.
Last year the warm weather took a while, so when spring finally arrived, I was rearing to go start some veggies in the garden. I had it all planned out: me and the kids, in the garden, sharing a wholesome family gathering planting seeds, me teaching them all kinds of important stuff about self-sufficiency, sustainability, gardening... I had it all envisioned in my head.
Well, because spring was only just on its way, it took me a while to get organized. Tools needed to be retrieved from its winter storage in the shed, packs of seeds needed to be located from wherever they were left coming home from the shops, the soil needed to be prepared... well, you can imagine it took awhile.
Meanwhile the kids were playing around in the garden. Then not in our garden any more. In the nextdoor neighbour's garden. With the girl next door.
Not to worry, they'll not want to miss out on this fun
I told myself, busying myself getting everything ready for the grand moment.
More kids were pouring into the nextdoor garden.
I was finally ready to put the seeds in the soil, calling out to my youngest daughter to get her to join me in our moment of bonding and saving a little piece of the planet. Together.
She reluctantly came over to our garden only when even I heard the first tinges of annoyance in my voice.
Come on it'll be fun, then you can go back to your friends...
I gave her the pack of carrot seeds to hold onto while I went to fetch one last thing.
Bad move.
I am pretty sure I at this point heard the words ice cream being muttered from over on the other side of the fence. I really should have known better!
I came back as my youngest sunshine was digging deep in the bag for the last seeds.
Oh. You're already done. Did you make sure you put them in one by one - giving them space, like we talked about..?
She smiled her most brilliant, heart melting smiles, made some confirmatory noises and sped out of our garden, out of sight, to her friends and the promises of ice cream.
Fall arrived and the long awaited harvest could commence.
I come home from work one day, only to find an orange object lying on the kitchen counter, and my husband bent over in giggles:

LOL!! Yes, yes I know that feeling! We have these grand plans of together time, they rarely work out as planned but as long as theres smiles to be shared its all good, even if they are just next door with the other kiddos!
Well at least you came out of the deal with some interesting produce.
Yes 😁 we had plenty funny-looking ones, but this was the best 😄
