Homesteading - Trip to the Butcher

Today was last trip for hogs at the butcher until winter so we loaded up my half wild half duroc male hog. This guy is far from the largest we have but is very lean and mean to make up for it. The last to features actually makes him harder to load and handle then our larger males. This guy is strong, fast and being lean makes him a great jumper also. Here he is emerging from his pen.

I really did not want to butcher this guy since he produces fantastic fast growing babies but with us getting ready to move our other boars to breed our larger girls we just did not want to have to mess with him.

You can see I used pallets to build a wall of support and then used cattle panels in front to increase the height so he would not jump it. The panels themselves are not heavy enough on their own and a large hog will lift them and go right under but the combination of both together really creates a great barrier.

The pictures don't do him justice. I did not even realize how large he was until we got him up in the air and I could see he was almost 7 ft long and that is butt to snout. He should yield some nice meat but we don't get much bacon off these half wild hybrids since they have a large shield and are a learner hog then most other breeds.

He will produce a really nice looking skull for sale though. We should get enough off the skull and tusk to cover the cost of the butcher. The older the hog and the larger the tusk the more they sell for. A larger 10 inch tusk from a hog in good shape can bring several hundred dollars from the right buyer and since most farms now cut the tusk so they don't grow their is a very limited supply of quality tusk from older hogs which is why they bring a nice price.

Hi @liberyworms

I host a radio show every Friday on MSP Waves called The Alternative Lifestyle Show. The show covers homesteading, prepping, homeschooling, tiny houses, renewable energy etc.

I wondered if you would like to come on the show as a guest sometime?

If you check my profile you will see links to recordings of previous shows if you would like to listen to one.

Wow. I would like to but I think I will have to put it off until the slow season here. I help manage several restaurants here and we are right in the middle of busy season. Along with the homestead responsibility and trying to get my own worm business off the ground I am really over booked as is this time of year. Maybe when we get to the off season more toward winter I could. Thank you for the offer.

I don't agree animals killing but some people do it in a not so painful way and i really appreciate it 'cause I like meat, chicken, fish and those stuff xd.

Thanks for sharing these moments, those hogs look really fat o.o pretty good. See u my friend.

We raise our own meat so they can be cared for and live good lives and not live in concrete pens and feed slop garbage all day. Never easy to take off an animal you have raised from a baby and cared for when sick and sometimes ones that even end up in the house in dog kennels when it gets cold. Our animals get a lot of love and respect. That is why we try to use everything the animal produces including even the left over skull that we sell. This guys was a favorite that has been loved and handled from day one but being a half wild male he can be aggressive, mostly playful but a strong animal like that can be dangerous even when playing.

I'm happy for that my friend, I've been trying to raise some animals but I can't still cause I don't have space at home.

Anyways, you take care about them and that's amazing, besides that, using everything of the animal is one hunting rule that you respect, you do it awesome.
