Our Garden Is Just About Finished, Finally!

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Whoa, was it a long week. Many of you know about how somedays on the homestead are packed full and there are others where not much is going on. Well this week has been one of those long work weeks.

We have been getting quite a bit of rain this Spring and it has been enough to delay our garden. Well, we have had this little dry spell perfect for us to get it all in the ground. Just about the entire day was spent planting and I am glad to say that it the hardest part is about over :)

In years past, we have set aside about a 100 ft by 100 ft section for our garden. Not this year! We are switching things up a bit. Instead, we decided to go with smaller blocks and planted our seeds/plants closer together. In conjunction with these blocks, we are also thinking about setting up some IBC tanks that we really liked from last year. By putting our garden in these blocks, it will help us become more efficient with the space we use and hopefully more productive.

Something else new we are trying is the use of alfalfa on the plants. The alfalfa meal seemed a little pricey, so we bought a 50 lb of alfalfa pellets to sprinkle in the dirt around the seeds/plants. It seemed to help the tomatoes grow very fast and get much taller than some of the store bought plants. So, we are adding a little bit to everything to see if it makes a difference. So, we will have to wait and see.

With all these changes, it was also an experimental year in types of varieties we are growing. This will be the first year for popcorn, red okra, and black eyed peas. So, needless to say that I am getting very excited to see how these varieties turnout and I will hopefully find a few things that I would recommend. Now, we just have to sit back and wait for Mother Nature to water the little seeds.

Thanks for reading and I hope you’ll check back for updates!

Awesome. I'm still trying to get my garden in. Too much rain here also. From the looks of your surroundings, we could be neighbors. lol.

Haha! A lot of the Midwest looks the same. Trees and flat farm land.

We have been dealing with the rain and finally got the break we needed just recently. We are hoping that it will be a good year for our garden. Do you put out a big garden?

We have a good sized garden. We also have fruit trees and berry patches. This is from last years garden.

Nice! It looks like you have quite a bit going on. Our fruit trees are still relatively young and are just now getting to the point where we are getting a halfway decent harvest.

We were really hoping for a good year for our vineyard and strawberry patch to try our hand at making some wines. Last year wasn't so good, but I have a feeling this year will be better.

Good luck to you this year. I haven't had luck with the grapes. Strawberries on the other hand, have taken over my garden. My better half insisted on planting some in the middle of the garden. Needless to say 4yrs later they are worse than weeds. They would have been fine with their own separated area.

Keep posting updates. I should have some up after the rain stops.

You want to be careful adding a lot of nitrogen. Too much weakens the plants and leaves them susceptible to diseases and pests...

Thanks for the tip @goldenoakfarm! The alfalfa pellets were the only form of fertilizer that we added, so I am hoping that it will not be an issue. The tomatoes and peppers have seemed to do very well so far with it, so I am hoping that this will carry over to our other plants. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Looks like hard work but the fruits and veggie will be worth it though.

Oh man is it! We are trying numerous new varieties, so it should be fun. Thanks for stopping by!

Very nice!! I wish I had that kind of room! Check out my channel if you are ever interested in trying straw bale gardening.

Cheers and happy gardening!

Thanks @brewcitygardener! I have been wondering how it all works, so I will have to check it out.

Looking forward to seeing how it works out.

Thanks @florio!
