Right Information, Wrong Time - Page by Page | Chapter Four - Part One

Welcome back to my chapter-by-chapter review of The Weekend Homesteader by Anna Hess! Last time, we talk about the importance of finances. Now it is time to move on to the next chapter (July) and section - fall planting!

Part One - Fall Planting

Welp… this would have been handy to read earlier in the season and isn’t very applicable at the moment… but since I am going in order of chapters, we’re going to review it anyways (and learn what we need to for next fall)!

This section was pretty lengthy since it explored what to plant, when to plant, AND how to plant. It begins with a list of crops that require cooler temperatures, including:

  • Lettuce
  • Leafy Greens
  • Radishes
  • Garlic
  • Turnips
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Peas
  • Leeks

Deciding when to plant is crucial because the first killing frost will be your undeniable deadline. A handy chart is included which I’ve scanned and included so I can refer to it again and again!

Planting in the fall is similar to planting in the summer, except now you have to worry about “desiccation” - to become thoroughly dried or dried up. So the author recommends a few methods of planting to avoid this including starting vegetables inside in flats and planting them a bit deeper than you would in the spring.

What plants do you grow in autumn? What challenges does growing late in the season present that you normally do not face?
