HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOU CHICKEN COOPS AGAINST SNAKES.

Chicken owners living with snakes.

As most chicken owners know you will have a very high chance at running into a snake sooner or later.

As owners it is our responsibility to protect our livestock.

Snakes are afraid of people.
Most snake bites happen when people try to kill or handle them.
Knowing your local species helps.
Using hardwire to fence your coop is your best defense.

Use spill proof feeders or clean spills up every evening.
Keep food locked up and take feeders in during the night.
This will keep rats and mice from moving in. Without a reliable food source snakes will not stay.
Keep brush trimmed three feet off the ground. Keep grass mowed to 3 inches or less.
Empty feed bags, old tarps, metal, or wood piles make a very inviting home for snakes and mice. No home no food equals no snakes.

Snakes do not want to eat your full grown chickens.

They may kill them if the chicken attacks it. Small chick's are at risk to some snakes.
But again hardwire will keep those safe.
If you find a snake a good blast with cold water from the water hose will send them on their way.

If you have to move it please use care.
Use a bucket and stick.
Push the snake in the bucket and put a lid on it. If you relocate make sure they have a place to find cover quickly.

I know many people are afraid of snakes and the first thought is to kill it, but these guys are very important to keeping rodents from spreading diseases.
