Update On The Three Sisters Garden

A three sisters garden is typically corn, beans and squash all growing together in the same spot. These three plants will grow in symbiosis. The corn gives the beans a trellis to grow up and the squash will cover the ground with there big leaves and help keep the moisture from evaporating.

We are mixing it up a little bit and experimenting with a couple different types plants in the Three Sisters Gardens. We're replacing corn with sunflowers and squash with cucumbers.

There is a saying around here about corn. Knee high by the 4th of July. Ours is right on pace.

Have y'all tryed to grow three sisters before? What type of plants did you try? I'll keep y'all updated on the progress of the three sisters gardens.

I've not tried it before, but that's really inspiring.

Do you plant them at the same time? I wonder if you could work in some subterranean crops like potatoes too...

a subterranean crop would be a good idea. potatoes may take up to muck space. but i bet carrots would do well.

you can plant them all at once with a good plan and proper spacing. or you can plant them at separate times and kind of fill in the space's when you think it's a good time.

Sweet! For a complete newbie, which of the two approaches would you recommend?

Some people plant corn early with great results but here if you plant in June and harvest in Sept you miss all the corn worms that you get in the early spring.

Our limas we planted near our corn got too wet and by the time they actually germinated, everything else was too big and shaded them out. Usually we try.

Also, we grew a C. maxima squash variety and it was allowed to climb in the corn: bad idea. Had a nasty wind/rain storm and knocked the corn down about waist height. Learning as we go, I suppose.

Yeah I really like the idea of the Three Sister's Method. We were going to try it this year, but the weather was not working with us. So, we were just happy to get everything in the ground. Haha! I am hoping to try this in the next year or two because is seems like a lot of people really like it.

dood that is SWEEEHEETTT and its all legal in NC? I forgot ... Lovin this post and many blessings to you as you til the earth and make amazing herb!!

Thank you @eaglespirit of the Hopi & Apache Native American tribes! But I only wish the plants you think you saw were actually what you think they are. It is still illegal here in NC. I hope not to much longer though.

I am a member of The Sault Set. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in the U.P. of Michigan. Good to meet you!

@hopfarmnc no kidding! yeah i was wondering why they looked so low and not much like hops. LOL
for some reason because of your name i thought you were a grower of all sorts and i was actually hoping that was hemp. it was late ... something green ... you know. LOL medicine!! oh well, i'm sure when it's legal in NC you will be working your magic.

very nice to meet you too and so happy to meet a tribal member from a different tribe. especially chipp, not easy to come by meeting someone from your lineage! :)

me i'm almost a dime a dozen down these parts. hehe
tho not my exact mix or lineage, but that's okay we are all One.

Nice meeting you too!

Three sisters is a wonderful concept in farming. I've try many times and failed, before i know the timing of sowing each plant. Before i sow Bean corn and cucumber in the same time and at the end, only cucumber grow well. Corn and beab covered by cucumber. Hahaha

Thanks for sharing this. Its remind me to the funny moments in my farm
