Easy Way Anyone Can Start Their Own Seeds!!

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

Yep! Those are probably what you think they are. The old empty Toilet paper rolls that we used throughout the year. It is a great way to use a waist product that was going to end up at the dump.

I'll be showing you how I am starting over 80 seedlings with some good potting soil and some recycled materials. Lets take a look...

Almost everyone has this "waist product" and doesn't think twice about throwing them away when the roll is empty. Well now you have a use for them. Simply save them up over the year and come spring you won't have to go out and buy something to start your seeds in.

The soil I'm using is a locally made potting mix that I added worm castings to. The same mix that we use for our Soil Block Maker.

Daddy Pete's Potting Mix Made in North Carolina.

Home made worm castings. Made in our Vermicompost bins.

These Pepsi carriers that were going to be thrown away work great for holding the toilet paper rolls! 60 of the TP rolls will fit in one carrier!!

Fill the empty TP roll with soil. You can do this individually or by shoveling the soil over the rolls wile in your carriers.

Pack the soil in a little. You don't want big air pockets in the soil. Air pockets can cause a Anaerobic situation witch is not good for the plant.

Today we planted 60 broccoli starts and 22 cabbage starts.

Put two to three of these small seeds in each Tp roll. I like to plant more than one seed in each one because not every seed will germinate. So plant more than one for a better success rate per roll. In a few weeks thin the TP roll down to one seedling per roll.

Lightly cover the seeds with a layer of soil. 1/8 of an inch max on top of the seeds.

The 60 Broccoli starts are on the left and the 22 cabbage starts are on the right. Why 22 cabbage? Simple I ran out of TP rolls. LOL

Be sure to give your seeds a good water and your done. An added bonus to using the TP rolls is that the card board that the roll is made of will soak up water and help keep your seeds moist. In two to three weeks these will be transplanted into the ground. I'll bring y'all along with me when the time comes!!

Hope this encourages you to save you toilet paper rolls and grow some food!!!

What a great use of recycled waste. I have done this myself with egg cartons.

Thank you @gardengirlcanada! Egg cartons are a great idea also!

Thank you for contributing your knowledge to help others! This post has been added to the Sotall.org Directory of Self Sufficiency & Survival posts. One of our goals is to provide access to the knowledge of our fellow Steamians, that will still be seen, long after the 7 day period is passed. If you write any future articles with instructions on how to do any tasks related to a homestead or survival, to ensure they are added to the directory, please submit them. They will be added as soon as possible.

  1. Nice enty. first sentence made me lough so hard.
  2. thats such a GREAT [zero waste] idea. To bad we don't use TP :)

Thank you @silini! I'm glad it gave you a laugh.😆 Curious on what you uses if not TP?

water [bidetta]. Best thing ever.

  1. We don't have to buy TP [we dont generate any waste [plastic cover]]
  2. we don't clog up our septic tank
  3. it feels a lot cleaner

I guess you can plant them directly in the ground without removing the TP roll? Good idea. Keep us posted.
Following!

You absolutely could just plant them right in the ground. I will probably open them some to make sure the roots don't get root bound.

Gotcha, its still a lot better then having to remove them from the starter trays.

Man, this is an awesome idea!!! We're gonna use TP rolls too...no time to waste either for spring planting...Thanks @hopfarmnc !
