Mother Natures Medicine~stinging nettle and cleaver infusion

Spring is finally in the air here in the UK, and a wonderful way to celebrate it, is to make a tonic infusion with two very beneficial plants. The humble stinging nettle and cleaver herb that are found literally right on ones doorstep.

The method I use is to pick just the tips of the nettle plants, some people wear gloves to pick them to avoid getting stung, this time of the year most of their energy is going into growth so their isn't much sting in them so I pick them by hand. Make sure you pick your nettles well away from anywhere that pets have been for obvious reasons.

The cleavers are always found growing happily in compliment alongside the nettles, these are far more easier to collect, they cling to our clothes like Velcro. I always think they are subtlety trying to cling on to us because they want to show us how beneficial they are.

Once I have a good bunch of each in the pot I quickly rinse them and add some spring water untill they 're covered in water. The next step is to bring it to the boil on the hob then put a lid on the pot and simmer it gently for around 5 minutes.

The pot is then taken off the hob and the lid left on for another five minutes before serving so it has plenty of time to infuse together slowly, depending on the amount of nettles the brew should be slightly green and have a fresh taste.

The great thing about drinking nettle and cleavers tea in the springtime, and why they are such a great tonic is they stimulate the lymph glands, and also boost the immune system something the body needs after the long dark winter.

I drink nettle and cleaver tea throughout the springtime or at least till they stop budding. Nettles can be such a great tonic that It has been known to interfere with certain pharmaceuticals, so it would be best to check with a doctor if you want to try this brew if your on medication.

Beautiful nature dear

We have both of those plants here in Tennessee. I’ll have to try that.

If you do @stillwatersart let me know what you think 😊

I’ve made nettle tea which li like a lot, but I forgot you could use cleavers.

They always grow alongside, which tells me of their compliments of each other @stillwatersart 😊😊

We also have Poke here, have you made a poke salad? Not sure if its just an East Tennessee thing.

That looks good smilyman, We should build you a garden box on that roof of yours. That way you don't have to worry about yellowed greens.

I have cooked poke sallet once. It tasted good, but cooks down to almost nothing. You would have to have a lot to get many servings.

Middle Tennessee Steemer here.

You shoud listen to some of @possumworks podthings @stillwatersart Toads bait shop will have you "hooked" in no time, "spinning" you his hilarious "tails". 😊

I think I will! 😀

Wish I could see the ground here, let alone a nettle! I use them for plant nutrients in the garden also, magic of nettles😁

Magic nettles for sure @movingman I bet nettles make the best nutrient feed too 😉

I learnt they hold pritty much everything from calcium to magnesium, over 20 elements?!

ROLL ON NORWIEGEN SPRING!!

Predicted minus 6 in the morning and there was blizzards today lol..

Wow that's amazing and something I didn't know. Comfrey is also good as a nutrient feed for plants if you make a strong tea with them, wondering if you have them growing up in Norway where you are?

ah yeh comfreys the classic! ive only ever used comfrey once in spain someone introduced it to my veggy garden :) not sure if they grow up here good point :)
The nettle has a lot of nitrogen also, and yeh like i say, soooo many other elements in there as well thats why it really is medicinal , and also a family member to the weed plant :)

I shall remember this tip of I grow some nice plants 😊
I travelled trough Pakistan years ago and i remember seing huge patches of weed plants growing wild along the road they looked just like nettle
Bushes 😊

I love nettle tea. I am just getting some fresh new growth to start using now.

@papa-pepper is getting into all things nettle as well at the moment.

Here in Somerset they are just starting to bud like the trees, I should imagine they probably come out a few weeks later where you are in Wales @pennsif 😊
i will check out @papa-pepper and his blog now 😊
Wishing you a wonderful week 😊

Amazing HappySmileyMan! I'm impressed you managed to put this post together so fast and great of you to share your nettle and cleaver drink. Will see if I can get a moment to try this.

You should, it's the best springtime tonic i know too.

Grew up on nettle tea. Love nettle soup! I remember Jamie in the nettle eating comp in Dorset years back. Jeez that was a night! And Jarrah as a kid always falling in them and screaming! Cure for that was blackberries... distraction tactic!

A nettle eating competition now theirs a novel and very "british" sounding past time if i ever heard of such a thing.
Thats two things I've learnt now today!.
Please don't ask what the first was as I've forgotten it already.
