Crop rotation - Today the cole section

in #homesteading6 years ago

Dear steemers,

With my steemit wallet not growing much lately - au contraire - it is best to look at some things that grow each day when watered and receiving some light.

Vegetables of the organic garden (todays pictures)

Below you can see some pictures of the cole field. Each year a family of the same plants is planted on a different section of the organic garden. We have six sections and transfer the plant families clockwise each year. This way specific nutrients used by that family can recover 5 years before the same family appears again at that section.

As for instance potatoes (family nightshade) exhaust the soil in a section it is best to plant beans (fam. name Fabaceae) in that section the next year. Beans get their own nitrogen from the air by means of their roots/ symbiosis with a little fungus on the roots (If I understood correctly). So each family has it's own spot in the crop cycle!

Here are the photo's of the cabbage section, all plants did quite well although we are on sandy ground!

If there is anything you do not know let me know in a comment and I will look up the english name for you.

regards

Thanks. Honoured. Now following you. Hope I fit in a little.

Thank you! I'm sure you will!

We currently only have enough space for a four part rotation. 1 is tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and flowers. 2 is beans, peas, corn, squash, and flowers. 3 is the brassicass family and flowers. 4 is carrots, peanuts, parsnips, and flowers. We try to companion plant as much as possible and our corn was ready a lot earlier than usual. Although it's the first year adding a greenhouse to the rotation as well. Happy growing!

Correct. There are more methods. Like three sisters. We tried that as well in small part of garden.

Dino Kale is my fav!!

we call it "Palmkool"
