3rd Seed Starting March 2018
So I got an early start yesterday, making markers, writing notes for each plant and setting up the trays. My friend who helps me came around 9AM and we turned into a production shop! We only had until 12:15 when she had to leave and we had 15 trays to do 264 seedlings.
Here’s what’s for the start:
Vegs:
Artichokes
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Mesclun
Swiss chard
Herbs:
Bible plant/Costmary
Lady’s mantle
Lavender
Parsley
Santolina
Wormwood
Flowers:
Canterbury Bells
Columbine
Daisies
Dianthus
Poppies
Salpiglossis
Schizanthus
Stocks
Sweet Annie
Sweet William
I had some things in the fridge in the barn to stratify/vernalize. I asked my husband to bring them up to the house when he came back from chores. It had been so cold in the night they had frozen solid. So I put them on the heat mats to thaw out. They were:
Blue flax
Delphinium
Phacelia
I had to move things around on the benches in the living room to make room for the seedlings. I had 5 trays for by the woodstove, 7 trays by the living room door, 2 trays for the east window in the kitchen and 1 tray for the fridge. The fridge one had Echinacea paradoxa from @derekfreeman and the santolina. I used the spare fridge at the house this time!
I ended up not having to put anything in the cold frames. Just as well because it had turned colder than predicted. They can go out tomorrow when it’s to nearly hit 60F.
We managed to finish just in time, except for clean up. That didn’t get done as my husband had to make an emergency trip into VT for computer repair and he was going right by the Vermont Country Store. I had never been there, so I got ready real fast, made a lunch and off we went.
It was really cool! I saw lots of stuff I remembered from the catalogs, found a hat I’d love to have for the garden (if it didn’t cost $25), and tried out a lot of the goodies they had to sample. I found some lilac hand cream that had the most lovely scent! We had a grand time seeing things we hadn’t seen since the 60’s or 70’s, and my husband loved the candy selections! We got out of there for 80 cents, just a few candy samples. Can you believe it??
So a long, very busy day, but fun and productive. Today I sit quietly and recover….

Thrilled to see so many seeds you two were able to get sowed.
Curious about the Bible plant/Costmary... never heard of it before. What do you use it for and in for seasoning? Or herbal teas?
Actually, I have not used it for anything. My sister put the first herb garden in and it was in there. I am starting many of the ones she had put in that disappeared and ones that she put in but never did much because they need more sun or different soil. I will plant them in the New Herb garden this year. This is one of the not did much ones.
Here's the post I did on it a couple weeks back:

GREAT!! Thank you- I'll check it out.
I love adding new herbs and flowers to my gardens.
Wow! That's a lot of seeds!
I have started some recently, but no where near that many!
Best of luck with your garden this year!
Hoping those grow for you! I now have a little time to devote to fixing stuff and changing things as I might need, All of my garden is ready except my summer stuff which will go out next week!
