Nature's medicine.

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Sage or Salvia officinalis is a remarkable herb of great value and I am fortunate enough to live in a region that it flourishes practically everywhere. All the fields around my home village are filled with it, no need for anyone to cultivate it. I love to walk around in spring time when it blossoms and the beauty of the flowers along with its characteristic scent are filling my eyes and my lunges. I took the shots below in one of those walks and they are my excuse to tell you a few words about sage.

In ancient times the Chinese traders were happy to take European sage exchanging it with the triple quantity of their best tea. The botanical name Salvia is distinctive of its value since it originates from the verb "salvare", meaning save.

From the common cold to sore throat, laryngitis and tonsillitis, sage has been a valuable medicine for centuries and that's just the beginning of the list. As a mouthwash it is effective against inflammation of the gums and mouth ulcers. Thanks to its volatile oil it can relieve from gas while it stimulates the digestion. It can give a boost to a weak nervous system and it can stop perspiration. It can be used against menopause flashes and it is very helpful in cases of dysmenorrhea. And I am sure that there are a few more that I am missing here!
Nevertheless nature's medicines are still medicines and have to be treated accordingly. So I am not going to elaborate on recipes and dosage and I have to tell you that even the simple sage tea should not be taken on daily basis for more than two weeks. I do use it to my herbal tea mix though, quite often :)

Beautiful photos. Sage is a pretty powerful plant, for sure. Thanks for using the tag #naturalmedicine, and hope to find you again here! Do you use it much in cooking?

Thank you @naturalmedicine!
Actually I don't use it much in cooking, it has a pretty strong taste that fits great with meat but I don't cook meat :)

Yes, that's the problem with sage. I do like it fried til crispy in butter or oil, on top of a risotto though! It's the only savoury food thing I can think to do with it - ! By the way, we've got the discord up and running - do come and visit us! Would love to have you onboard.

That sounds interesting (and tasty), I'll try it!
How do I find you in discord?
