The Fruity Side of My Week
So this week I was gifted with 500kg of grapefruit - nice right? Well yes! Up until the point that I realized that I had to upload and offload the entire load by hand myself. None the less I was still very grateful for the fruit.
So what do you do with 500kg's of Grapefruit?
A huge load of grapefruit like this really goes a long way on a farm, a whole lot of these fruit will be kept for personal consumption in the form of juice or just as is, and the rest of these fruit will be used as a great source of winter food for the animals on the farm, this also means that the fruit would need to be diced into smaller pieces in order for them to be able to eat them.
Now that I think about it, I could also try making some preserves from this huge stash of fruits; I am sure that if I go do a bit of homework that I would be able to find some decent jams, marmalade and chutney recipes for grapefruit on the internet, and if I do find something that looks appealing, I will be very eager to give that a try.
I am even quite tempted to try and make some grapefruit-wine but given the fact that I think that would fall under a level of skills that I am not yet familiar with, I might need to try and free up some time first, but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't try, right?
Making a new friend along the way:
While I was busy packing over the grapefruit into more manageable containers, this little gecko who was comfortably hiding inside of some of the empty crates jumped out to say hi, and then he decided to hang around for a while supervising me as I worked. Occasionally raising his head as if to say "can't you work any faster" and at the same time he also served as a bit of motivation, because, as a looked at his little feet as he clung to the side of the pickup while I worked I kept on thinking to myself "Just hang in there"

A question that tickled me about loading 500kg of grapefruit is this: You couldn't exactly just throw them all into the back of the truck at great distance can you?
How do you go about it?
had to load it over from a bulk bin by hand :( was rough
That's backbreaking work that... eish.
I have never been able to enjoy grapefruit. I find it so bitter. Do you eat it with sugar, or just as is?
well I normally add either sugar or salt, it sure is an acquired taste though and the trick is in eating only the fruit cells and not the segment membranes
Good tip. I will give it a try. We don't often get them in the shops, but I have seen some around lately.... I'll go buy one and try it your way.
Yes their season is only starting now, you should start seeing them more and more round about now ...

Woow 500kg! My first question would be Why was it gifted? Excess crop? Or would a favour be requested in the future etc etc (I'm just suspicious)!
That is a big amount.
Nice job on the unloading and putting it into crates! I am sure there will be huge benefits and uses for that lot...
NICE!
hahaha we still do some old school bartering up here from time to time :D the reason was mostly that it was excess at the packaging plant, they got in more fruit than what they could store or pack and offered us some. LOL but it was not gifted on a expectation of return however, but we always reach out to each other when we can or have spare - this is ideal animal (and human) feed especially throughout the winter months
Ahaa , i see... Great to be in that type of situation/environment. Also good for engagement and building ties with other people.
It certainly is. Thank you so much for your support!
I used to eat mine with sugar, but I find if you peel the skin and pith away from the fruit it's rather tasty on its own. Sometimes they peel away easily but a lot of times they're a sticky yet delious mess! -Aimee
haha - at this stage I simply prefer the juice :D But I seriously want to try make some chutney
I do love a good chutney! When we have an abundance of rhubarb that's precisely what I did with it. 😃 -Aimee
Oh that sound so nice - I should actually grow rhubarb again ... hmmm thank for the reminder LOL
Thems a helluvalotta grapefruuuits, miss Breezin! I'd say you're pretty well set on Vitamin C for the next several years, at least.
