Garden bed preparing and first harvest in 2019
Arrived today at my new homestead, I was surprised to find that my neighbor turned on the electricity (I have a temporary line from him), what was not already half a year.
To celebrate this , I immediately grabbed the cultivator and went to tidy up a distant garden, which I abandoned because of the house building.
Our soil is heavy, although I improve it every year by adding sand and ash, and the cultivator is weak, so I had to dig everything in beforehand with a shovel, and only then go through the cultivator.
For a couple of hours the work was completed, the garden had acquired a more or less decent appearance and was ready to be sown.
At the same time, I reopened one of the beds, which, to improve the condition of the soil, I covered it with hay a year ago, covered it with polyethylene and left it to rot ( @sagescrub just posted about same method ).
The result pleased me. Despite the fact that hay did not rot to the end, the soil under it looked just fine, fatty worms confirm this.
And another significant event today - the first harvest of winter carrots!
Truth be told, I just forgot to dig them out last year, but it's nice :)

Glad @sagescrub gave you sage advice about the soil, and glad it worked! Nothing better than a nicely cultivate bed ready for Spring. And bonus carrots too!

How exciting to have so much more garden space to use and ready to plant! We also have been enjoying a few forgotton carrots that overwintered :) Its a fun discovery, especially end of winter/early spring when there's not a lot of fresh food left.
