RE: Promoting Wildlife by Excluding Deer
GREAT post @wildhomesteading. I think I can understand the need to protect your plants from wild deer. In Australia, they are not an indigenous animal and yet they are increasing in numbers and causing incredible damage in the Southern Highlands ~ South of Sydney ~ To gardens, eating vegetables and the leaves of plants and trees.
The story behind the deer problem here: They escaped from a deer park that hadn't been cared for ~ Went feral and multiplied.
A similar problem for us in Sydney is the Brush Turkey. Because some of its preditors ie native foxes have been bated and now the Brush Turkeys are re-claiming their territories, which are now suburban gardens.
Because they're an indigenous species they are protected ~ So about all we can do when they scrape off every single grain of topsoil with the mulch (cultivated from years of garden clippings etc) is protect our vegie patches with fencing ~ String with bird scare tape seems to work for now. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎
Yeah, when we throw off the prey predator balance things become a mess... I know in my area it is unlikely that large predators will be reintroduced since it is semi-urban. There are a few large predators still around but their numbers are far to low to keep the deer in check. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience!
