Alaskan Homestead update : 29th of May 2018

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Update on the green house, animals, chopping wood, how much sunlight we have now, the leafs on the trees, and I defrosted my freezer and found a surprise.

So let’s begin the update on our Alaskan life 😊

So my green houses where gifted to us, they were already 3 years old when we got them so they are now about 7 years old. The threads are weak and snap easily. Well the back wall on one was coming apart literally at the seams. So I removed it all the way.
I then had my kids help me move the green house and back it up against the other. Zip tied them together with heavy duty( 180 lbs ) zips. Opened the flap I sewed shut to allow warmth into the other side.
Now I have a hot house and one that’s for more cooler climate tolerant plants.
Oh yeah I am feeling cool now!

I have this fan attached to the peak to blow the heat around. I didn’t have to add it either, was already in the spot it needed to be.

😍This beautiful plant is a citronella😍

The above are the plants that need to be in the hot house.

And here is the other side, new side.

My potatoes, the purple ones are freaking HUGE. They are about 1.5 foot tall. The heat has made then collapse 😕

Then my strawberry patch, the one I harvested/transplanted.
I originally asked my husband to remove the stump, but he would have to use the four wheeler. Then the four wheeler would dig holes into my barley patch and ruin it. So instead I am working with it.

I have two carrot patches but nothing special enough to take a photo of.

We dug a hole in the yard for the ducks. Wish I could plant barley in the yard, but everyone keeps eating the seeds 😠

Log blog:

We have been cutting down more trees and stacking. It just doesn’t seem like much as been done until you see a big difference. But you feel it.

This is like the start of a yo mama joke, steel toe logging boot and a skirt. Yes, I chop wood in a skirt. 😊

Man it is hard not to take advantage of all the light to get stuff done, but it can and does become disorienting.

I had to defrost my freezer, kinda a strange thing to hear from someone in Alaska even to me. But I had to defrost it.

The frost was about 4 inches, or more, thick.

That’s a lot of frost! My kids would grab a handful and throw it like a snowball, LOL

Surprise!

Well shit! How long has that been in there?!

Well that’s it for our update, my hubby @alaskatactical has some soap up for grabs.

It’s relaxing sleepy time soap, my favorite! It’s great for bed time routines, or a relaxing shower after a long day.
You should go check it out!

Cool update! Oh yes the summer times are getting disorientating! Interesting to see you have around an hours more light than here in south Norway.
Love the dress :) Thats definatly a "one of a kind!" and great to see the dog looks like its not going to eat the ducklings whilst anyone is looking atleast :) Do you get wolves there?

Thanks! I love my skirt, I made it too.
There are wolfs but haven’t had any around us. Berry picking is another story.
We do have a weasel running around 👎

You ducks have a guard dog! LOL Your freezer looks like mine did about a month ago. How the heck does that happen? Love the skirt!

Thanks 😊
Yeah she likes “babies”, she licks them. But they don’t like it at all.
I have no idea, it even happens in winter

You should defrost the freezer more often then. LOL

LOL yeah, maybe just a bit.

Your birds are getting big fast!
Nice find! 😉

Yes they are! Hubby says that the goose isn’t even done growing yet.
Thanks 😊
