Garden: Received William Dam Seeds for Spring Seedlings and Seeder Seeding

I received the last delivery of seeds for the garden this year - well maybe - from William Dam Seeds of Ontario Canada, they specialize in organic and untreated seeds. Above is the EarthWay Seeder for direct garden row seeding.

The remaining seeds will be started inside early for spring garden transplanting. Above is a picture of the soon to be garden rows, just need to wait until the ground thaws to build them.

Most of the seed plants are Annual and will need to be replanted each year or rotation. Some of each plant will be allowed to grow to full seed for collecting and replanting the next year. Some of these seeds are for herbal Perennial plants for this climate zone and will live on year after year.

Row Seeder: Salad Mix Lettuce and Auxiliary Greens

I'll be direct seeding a variety of lettuce to see which ones perform the best for salad mixes. Salad Bowl, Tango, Royal Oak Leaf, Aerostar, Tamarindo, and Ashbrook Sulu MI are the varieties of lettuce I will be trying this summer.

Auxiliary greens used on their own or added to salad mixes will also be direct seeded to garden rows. Including Arugula varieties, Spinach, Tatsoi, Mizuna, and Red Russian Kale.

Seeder Seed Plates for Seeds of Most Sizes

Seeds are a variety of sizes and require different spacing between plants. The garden row seeder can handle most seed requirements, it comes with changeable seed variety discs for proper seed dispensing. Attach the plate for the seeds, fill the seed hopper. As you walk the seeder down the row there is a plow that makes a trench, a seed is picked up by the rotating seed disc and dropped at the correct seed spacing, then a chain dragging behind covers the trench over. I'll be posting footage of the seeder in action seeding - after the ground thaws.

Carrot seeds are very tiny, I will be planting the varieties of carrots by hand.

Radish, beets, and turnips will be seeded with the row seeder.

The red and bunching onions in the picture below I will be direct seeding in the orchard - around and in rows - near the baby fruit trees.

Seeds for Early Indoor Starting

Plants that are use to longer growing seasons and the ones that bear fruit I like to start before the spring time and transplant the seedlings to the garden when there is no longer morning frost.

The hot pepper, tomato, cucumber, and pea seeds will be started indoors early to give them a head start when the spring comes. Especially with hot peppers, if they are started months earlier the harvest will be many times larger.

Herb seeds will also be started indoor early for potting and transplanting. The oregano and basil I always use to cook with. Stevia is a very sweet herb that has no effect on blood sugar - great for tea or recipe substitutions.

Spring's not too far away, we'll be seeing green soon.

This is fantastic - I cant wait to see how it turns out!
And well done on choosing non GMO & Untreated seeds!!

Other than what comes in store bought potting soil, the seeds will only be exposed to a quality soil mixture, and compost tea eventually. Once we're up and running we'll be only adding our own soil from composted materials and juniper lower branch char. Thanks @breezin :)

One love

That is the only way forward!
My farm is at a point of being mostly self sustainable now (food wise at least) and it is an amazing liberating feeling to say the least!
Best of luck on your journey ahead!

Excellent. I never knew I needed a seeder before now I want one. As we were planting I was reminiscing about the days we planted tobacco growing up. All we had to do was sit on the planter on the back of the tractor and place new baby tobacco plants in this arm as it rotated around and it planted and covered them. I had no idea there was a small manual version for seeds!

The seeder i have was $180 at the hardware store. It will make planting garden rows much easier, especially for seeding the greens and lettuce which will be planted close together and replanted atleast 3 times a season. I have marked out 8 garden rows, 30" wide each row, 50 foot long rows, two of the rows i'll be using for salad mix lettuce and greens. The seeder will save lots of time spent on seeding :)

Yeah, that's great. This will be the first time we plant a really big garden. I really need to pick one up.

It interests me in the progress of this sort of thing. Be good to see them grow...

I'll have my camera with me at all times for these projects in the spring and summer - i'll do an update with the time slice progress of the indoor seedlings too - it's going to be a lot of work with the outdoor projects, i'll have to play my cards right :)
