Remember When - The Sunday Dinner Table

in #homestead7 years ago

After thinking about things this past weekend and spending a great day yesterday with my husband at a church service, Baptism event and church sponsored Triple A Minor League Baseball Game, it made me think about all the fabulous times spent at the family dinner table on Sunday afternoons for meals, a moment to stop and enjoy life and catch up.

So, that got my mind thinking about what ever happened to Sunday dinners? Family time? And enjoying a wonderful home-cooked meal together.

From there my mind wandered to starting a Monday morning ritual of posting a consistent article about 'Days Gone By and Remember When'. Family traditions and ways of life that have disappeared; but not forgotten, in the minds of many people and families.

So, sit back and enjoy...

When my kids were little we would spend Sunday afternoons (high noon and not a moment later) having 'dinner' at my in-laws house. We didn't eat lunch; it was dinner (as they were from the south and that is what the midday meal is called).
We'd pack up the kids, drive across town for a meal of pot roast, homemade creamy mashed potatoes with real homemade gravy from the pot roast drippings, salad, fresh picked green beans or corn on the cob, fresh fruit and most importantly, dessert.
*Not every Sunday was pot roast - menu varied weekly.

We would spend all afternoon there. Brothers and sisters-in law with their children and spouses would come by. The house would be busting at the seams.

Sometimes we stayed so long that we ended up eating supper (the southern meal for the last meal of the day), which was always leftovers from dinner.

My three children, all grown and with families of their own, remember these Sunday gatherings fondly. But we have all scattered (live within 2 hours of each other) and just don't have the time to visit like this, and it saddens me. Whenever we attempt to make plans, it always falls through. Someone can't make it, someone is sick, always an excuse.

I sure do miss those days. I want my five grandchildren to experience these memories and one day say, "grandma, remember when..."

Very nice story I always remember when we visited grandma at her house, now I want to have kids and we constantly visit my parents (20 mins drive) at least once a month and my wife's parents (4,5 hours drive) at least once every 2 months. Family time is priceless and well invested time. Thanks for sharing it.

Exactly. It seems like so many families are getting further and further apart- distance-wise and sometimes emotionally and family-based.
Missed opportunities for today's generations.
