The journey of a Grounds man to 'Nice Garry': Last Part

in Cric-World 🏏4 years ago (edited)

Today I am going to end my blog on Nathan Lyon. I will not talk about any special match or any special moment of his career. For the rest of his career, we all see what he has done if you are a regular cricket match follower. Rather I will talk about the background story of my headline "Nice Garry".

There is also an interesting story about the name of Nathan Lyon. Any follower of Australian cricket must have heard the word 'Nice Garry' from behind the wicket. 'Nice Garry', it was first heard from the back of the wicket from the mouth of Matthew Wade.

By following him, the present Australian captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine also said the words 'Nice Gary' to the Lyon from behind the wicket. But how did this name come to be associated with Lyon? The word 'Nice Garry' is said to have originated from the name 'Garry Lyon', former captain of the Melbourne Football Club and currently involved in broadcasting.

Did Lyon ever think that Aussie cricketers, wrapped in a sheet of professionalism, would rejoice shoulder to shoulder in the dressing room with him? Did he ever wonder the little twist of his wrist would become part of the history-rich Aussie Cricket? Did he ever think to be a part of one of the greatest historical cricket tournament Asses? Did he ever thinks one day people write about him to inspire someone to say, "If there is a word impossible please take your eyes on Lyon"?

The combined answer of all, he may not have thought. That should never come to mind, Lyon reminded with his own words. Where is the fault of thinking? How big can the world of thought be? How many boundaries can spread the range of thought? How high can anyone think of himself from an ordinary field worker to a world-famous Aussie dressing room?

Lyon said with self-confidence in an interview,

"I believe I can take the wicket of any batsman anywhere in the world with my stock delivery. But that means constantly challenging the batsman's defense from different angles, spots, and variations. That is the main weapon in the subcontinent."

I will show a statistic for how reasonable his words are. So far in his career, he has taken 399 wickets in 100 matches at an average of 32.12. The statistics outside the home are more eye-catching, he has taken 184 wickets in 44 matches. There, the average is reduced by 2.7 to 29.42! In the subcontinent where all the legendary spinners have struggled, there Lyon had shown off-spin magic. He has taken 34 wickets at an average of 30.58 in 7 matches against India, In Sri Lanka, 24 wickets in 6 matches with an average of 33.58. Against Bangladesh, he has taken 22 wickets at an average of 14.31 in 2 matches! (Hasn't played in Pakistan yet.)source

I will end this story by reminding the word of former Redback coach Darren Berry on Nathan Lyon. The main lapidary Redback coach Darren Berry, if he had not found the Lyon that day, the story of the Lyon life might have been written differently! After seeing the Lyons bowling that day, Berry said:

"I saw the ball come out of an offspinner's fingers with genuine fizz and drift and loop and thought straightaway, 'This is special, this isn't just a flat offie'."

Nathan Lyon is constantly proving that Darren Berry did not make a mistake in recognizing the gem that day. Before finishing it I want to say, "Nathan Michael Lyon, keep going with your incredible story! There is more story left to be written on you!"
