India is the land of batsmen. There is no question about it. As Pakistan produce classy fast bowlers from nowhere, their neighbor- India do the same with batsmen. Sometimes it is not fair to say that they produce these players from “nowhere”, all comes in a well nurtured environment with a good first-class system and below.

So, this article is also about someone who was born in the wrong country in a wrong era. Indian batting line up has been world’s finest for some years now and if you get a chance, you have to grab it by both hands but sometimes although you grabbed it by both hands, that might not be enough. As in the case of ever so talented yet so underrated Ambati Ryudu.

As a Sri Lankan, my first memory of him was bashing the ball every corner of the ground with some delightful innings in earlier versions of IPL for Mumbai Indians. As we followed Mumbai closely, we still remember that and then he was taken by Chennai Super kings and again in there he has played some sublime innings and still playing in the recently abandoned this year’s version. So, there’s no question about his talent at all.

He was the captain of India U-19 for the 2014 world cup and after massive scoring in IPL seasons, got the chance to represent India on 2013 against Zimbabwe, his debut of ODI and T20 debut against England in 2014. The main reason could be that he is a genuine wicket keeper batsman and while Dhoni is in the team, there was no chance for other wicket keeper batsman in the team. The same thing happened to Dinesh Karthik and Parthiv Patel as well. No matter how talented you’re sometimes you need a little luck as well.

So, in his short international career he had 1694 ODI runs in 55 matches at an staggering average of 47 and piles of runs at Ranji trophy seasonas and IPLs, infact has been the highest run getter in 2018 version with 602 runs for CSK. He never made it to the test team although having a staggering average of 45 in first class cricket, may be below par in Indian standard as the competency is very high, but surely a good number in other countries.

He said his final goodbye to the international cricket at the age of 33 in 2019 prior to the world cup as he was not selected even though some key players have been missed out due to injuries. His talent was never a question, but he could not perform as the expectations were high from him and Indian team couldn’t have him for longer period because there are lot of replacements always available.

So that is the story of another star who couldn’t shine proper due to many reasons and his name also will be written as one of the most underrated players in Indian cricketing history for sure.
