World's Best Cricket Stadiums

Today I will write about world's best cricket grounds which has their own popularity. I will write about the stadiums of Australia, England, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and South Africa. I have selected only one stadium from each country according to its popularity.

SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND

The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is a sports stadium situated in Sydney, Australia. It has been using for Test, One Day International and Twenty20 cricket, as well as Australian rules football, rugby league football, rugby union, and association football. It is the own ground for the New South Wales Blues cricket team, the Sydney Sixers of the Big Bash League and the Sydney Swans of the Australian Football League. It is owned and operated by the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, who also holds responsibility for the Sydney Football Stadium which is currently being redeveloped by the NSW Government.

In 1811, the Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie, opened the second Sydney Common, about one-and-a-half miles wide and extending south from South Head Road (now Oxford St) to where Randwick Racecourse is situated. Part sandhills, part swamp which is situated on the south-eastern fringe of the city, it was once used as a rubbish dump in the 1850s, and not signified as an ideal place for sports. In the year of 1851, the part of the Sydney Common south of Victoria Barracks was permitted by the British Army for use as a garden and cricket ground for the soldiers. Its first players was the 11th North Devonshire Regiment which flattened the southern part of the rifle range close to the Barracks.

Next few years, the teams from Victoria Barracks gathered themselves into a more permanent organization and called themselves the Garrison Club. The ground therefore had became known as the Garrison Ground when it was first opened in February 1854.



LORD'S CRICKET GROUND

Lord's Cricket Ground, popularly known as Lord's. It is a cricket venue in St John's Wood in the city of London. It is Named after its founder, Thomas Lord and it is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Europe Cricket Council and, until August 2005, the International Cricket Council. Lord's is famous for the Home of Cricket and is home to the world's oldest sporting museum.

In the current day the stadium is not on its original state, it is one of the third of 3 grounds that Lord established between 1787 and 1814. His first ground, now known to as Lord's Old Ground, was where the Dorset Square now stands. The Lord's Middle Ground, had been using from 1811 to 1813 before being avoided to make a way for the construction over its outfield for the Regent's Canal. The ground has capacity of 30,000 spectators. Authority are trying to develop to increase capacity and amenity. As the estimation of December 2013, it was proposed to re-innovate the ground at a cost of around £200 million over a 14-year period.



WANKHEDE STADIUM

The Wankhede Stadium which is an international cricket stadium situated in Mumbai, India. The stadium now has a total capacity of 33,108, following reconstructions for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Before the upgrading, the capacity was total 45,000.

The Wankhede stadium has hosted to numerous cricket matches in the past, mostly famous the 2011 Cricket World Cup final, in which Sri Lanka lost to India and who has became the first country to win the cricket world cup on own soil. The stadium has played host to the last match of the cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's international career. Moreover, it has hosted many matches during the 1996 and 2011 Cricket World Cups. The stadium has the record of hitting six sixes in an over by Ravi Shastri. As latest statistic till January 2020, it has hosted 25 Tests, 21 ODIs and 7 T20Is.

Galle International Stadium is a famous cricket stadium in the city of Galle, Sri Lanka, which is situated near the great Fort of Galle and fringed on two sides by the Indian Ocean. This stadium considered to be one of the most picturesque looking cricket grounds in the world. Before debuting in international cricket arena, it was popularly known as ‘The Esplanade’, and it is the home ground of the Galle Cricket Club. This historical Stadium is identified as one of the luckiest venues for the Sri Lankan national cricket team.

The was a race course in 1876. There was no any permanent pavilion until 1892, when a ‘Grand Stand’ was built according to a advice of P. A. Templer, who was the Secretary of the Galle Municipal Council. After that the racing court ceased and the ground was used for cricket matches more than races. The first ever school cricket match played at this venue, which known as the 'Galle Esplanade' dates in May 1888, which was between Richmond College, Galle and All Saints’ College, Galle. The Richmond-Mahinda Annual Cricket Encounter was started in 1905 at this venue and it is one of the longest cricket match series in Sri Lanka, which having been played for over 100 years. In 1927, the ground was officially declared profoundly as a cricket stadium. This ground hosted its first ever first-class match on 29 February 1984. The turf wicket was introduced to the stadium in 1945 under the guidance of Dhanapala Lorensu Hewa, who holed the Secretary position of the Galle Cricket Ground. With the assistance of the Colombo Cricket Club was also taken for this. It was later upgraded to international cricket standards, and it became the 7th international cricket stadium in Sri Lanka which able to host Test matches. The very first test match was played on the ground on 3 June, 1998. The match was played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, and Sri Lanka won by an innings and 16 runs. The first ever ODI match was scheduled to be held on 25 June 1998 between India and Sri Lanka, but it was abandoned due to the ground being flooded by overnight rain and heavy raining in the morning.

SHER-E-BANGLA NATIONAL CRICKET STADIUM

The famous Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium , which is also called Mirpur Stadium, which is a cricket ground in Dhaka. Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. The stadium Located 10(Ten) kilometers away from the city center in Mirpur. The ground holds almost 25,000 people. It is named after the great Bengali statesman A. K. Fazlul Huq. He was accorded the title Sher-e-Bangla ("Tiger of Bengal").

The ground was generally constructed for football in the late 1980s. The first hosted matches at the 1987 Asian Club Championship. After that the venue was taken over by the Bangladesh Cricket Board in 2004. It was replacing by the Bangabandhu National Stadium as the home of both the men's and women's national teams. The stadium has a total field dimensions of 186 m X 136 m.

The first ever international match at the redeveloped ground was held in December 2006. The stadium has since hosted few matches of the 2011 World Cup, also 2012 and 2014 Asia Cup and 2016 Asia Cup along with majority of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches. The great finals of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and Women's World Twenty20 were hosted at the famous stadium. The stadium hosted its very first International T20 on 11 October 2011, which was played between Bangladesh and Windies.On 17 January of 2018 during 2017–18 Bangladesh Tri-Nation Series, it has achieved to became the sixth and the fastest to host 100 ODIs.For the season of 2019–20 Bangabandhu BPL Final, almost 27,725 people gathered at this venue, which is the highest crowd attendance for the venue and beyond its capacity.



GADDAFI STADIUM

The Gaddafi Stadium which was known as Lahore Stadium is a cricket playing ground in Lahore, Pakistan. It is named after former Libyan head of state Muammar Gaddafi. The stadium is owned by the Pakistan Cricket Board. This was designed by architect and civil engineer Mohammad Nasreddin Murat Khan, and properly constructed by Mian Abdul Khaliq and Company in 1959. It was renovated for the 1996 Cricket World Cup when it hosted the final. The principle office of the Pakistan Cricket Board are situated at Gaddafi Stadium which making it the home of the Pakistan national cricket team. The stadium has a approximately capacity of 27,000 seats, and it has made it one of the biggest in Pakistan. Lahore Stadium was renamed in 1974 in honor of the former Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi by following a speech he was given at the second Organization of the Islamic Conference meeting which took place in Lahore in favor of Pakistan's right to pursue nuclear weapons.

In the season of 1995/96 the great Gaddafi Stadium was renovated by architect Nayyar Ali Dada who was qualified from National College of Arts Lahore for the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Dada's beautiful redesign was done in the Mughal style, along with red, hand-laid brickwork and arches. He also had plastic seating installed in place of the existing concrete benches. The outside under the stands was enclosed and converted to shops for various boutiques and offices. The Stadium was the first in Pakistan to be equipped with modern floodlights having their own standby power generators. *** ***

IMPERIAL WANDERES STADIUM

The Imperial Wanderers Stadium is a stadium situated just south of Sandton in Illovo, Johannesburg in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Test, One Day and First class cricket matches are regularly played here. It is the home cricket ground for the Highveld Lions, which is formerly known as Gauteng . The stadium has a total seating capacity of 34,000 and was built in mid 1956 to replace the previous Wanderers Stadium. It was fully overhauled following South Africa's readmission to international cricket in 1991. In 1996, 5 new 65 metre high (213 ft) floodlights masts replaced the existing four 30-metre-high masts, which enabling day-night limited overs cricket. It has nicknamed of 'The Bullring' due to its design and intimidating atmosphere.
