When you learn something new, you have the option to keep it to yourself or share it with others so they can also benefit from your knowledge.

When teaching your skills, there are several benefits that you can gain as an entrepreneur and an individual. In this article, I’ll explain five reasons why you need to teach your skills in order to get the most out of them and ensure they continue to help your business in the future.

1) By teaching, you can see what works

When you’re a new entrepreneur and you have a great idea, your first inclination is probably just to go for it. That approach isn’t always a bad one, but it can get you into trouble—especially if you haven’t taught anyone else how to do what you do.

Teaching others gives them an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback that can be valuable in helping you figure out exactly how something should work and whether or not people will pay for it. If no one ever teaches your skill, there’s no way of knowing that people actually need or want it.

2) By teaching, you can test new ideas

It's an undeniable truth that your skills improve by teaching. This is how you learn best: by putting into practice what you know and then refining from there.

Teaching others can be a way for you to test new ideas, too; whether it's through a workshop or a one-on-one setting, try throwing in something new as part of your presentation or lesson plan. You may discover that it works beautifully, or that it doesn't work at all. Either way, you're better off than if you never tried. It's like Steve Jobs said in his famous 2005 Stanford commencement speech: You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. The same holds true for learning new skills: Teach others and see where those dots lead!

3) Teaching builds confidence

The more you teach, by helping people learn your skills, the more confident you’ll feel in your abilities.

Over time, that confidence will spill over into other areas of your life. For example, if you’re teaching others about code, that experience can help with public speaking; if you’re teaching others about math (which can be intimidating for some), it can help in sales or business development conversations.

Teaching builds a deep understanding of topics: When you explain how things work to someone else, you often come away with a deeper understanding of how they work yourself. Not only will it improve your mastery of whatever topic/skill is under discussion but also gives a unique opportunity to apply knowledge learned in school and on-the-job.

4) Teaching looks great on your resume

A major benefit of teaching your skills is that it’s an excellent way to build your resume. In addition to experience, you’ll build connections with people who can help you down the road (networking!); these are both reasons why hiring managers favor candidates who have taught before. It also looks great on a resume or CV, which means you could increase your chances of getting accepted into a business school program or landing that dream job—when companies see teaching experience listed on your resume, they’ll know you have business sense and may be more likely to hire you in response. But don't forget about how useful it will be for networking—you never know when someone might approach you with a helpful connection or opportunity.

5) Teaching forces you to build relationships

When you teach your skills, you’re forced to build relationships. You need to reach out and find people who will learn from you. This takes time, but when done correctly it’s worth it. I’ve built some really amazing relationships with some truly brilliant people by teaching my skills. If nothing else, a well-structured class forces you to create a document that demonstrates how good of a teacher you are (and how good of a writer). If you can get over any inhibitions about selling yourself, then go for it!

Conclusions

The reason you should teach your skills is because you are helping others, creating community, and increasing your value.

Teaching a skill helps you understand it better and then when someone comes along who wants help with that skill, you will be prepared to answer their questions and help them succeed.

Teaching increases community by helping people build their confidence in a given skill or subject. It also helps you figure out if what you think is valuable really is because people are willing to learn from it.

By teaching other people your skills, there is an increase in demand for what it is that makes your business unique and special. This increase in demand causes more people to hear about what makes your business special which gives more exposure and good publicity which can affect sales positively.
