THE CITY OF BAMEND
Bamenda City in the North West Region of Cameroon is not very clean due to Poor management of waste disposal by the citizens.
Waste disposed from homes, private and public sectors have left some parts of the town very dirty, uncoonfortable an impassible.
The city’s municipal councils have made effort to keep the town clean from such mess from the private and public sector.
But to a greater extent the town still holds heaps of decaying waste for weeks, months and year in some community where it is in accessible
before they are carried away. Their strategy focuses on waste collection
transportation and disposal. One would expect that since the town generates a lot
of waste, there should be some form of recycling at the level of the municipality .
but most of the initiative to a very lesser extent has been taken up only at Waste management in Bamenda is facing challenges like lack of funding, poor knowledge on waste separation
technology in recycling and expertise in management. The city of Bamenda is one
in which you will not boast of clean streets, and drainage systems or clean
river beds as most of these areas have one form of waste or another, ranging from
leaves peelings branches, glasses and plastics. Plastics are often found in greater
numbers littering the streets.
Waste taking up the streets
In a few homes in Bamenda some people who are conscious about the need to
protect the environment bother about how they dispose waste. They have separate
trash cans in their homes for the disposal of waste. The cans are labeled and each
member of the household respects the descriptions. Even while out of their homes
they do not throw dirt at will. They are aware that the environment needs to be
clean as they dispose only where and when necessary. In other places degradable
On the contrary others who do not think and see proper waste disposal as a good habit to adopt in the city of Bamenda, they do not bother about separation of solid
and liquid waste as most families’ mix plastics with glass and kitchen refuse, in
their single trash can or waste bag. They do not check for proper waste disposal
and often allow kids to carry the waste to the waste bins. They often pile up the waste to huge amounts and before it reaches the waste bin, most of it is thrown on
the way by the road sides, in people’s farms, inside the river or besides the waste
bin and not inside the bin where it is supposed to be thrown. Most waste bins are
positioned at the road junctions of each neighborhood. As a result of poor waste
disposal by adults and kids, most roads are flooded and blocked by plastics and
other forms of waste whenever it rains heavily.
This renders the roads impassable,
marshy and later stinky as well contributing to flooding. However, the councils in
the Bamenda city has made inadequate and untimely efforts to remove and transfer
the waste whenever possible thus leaving some of these road junctions nasty,
impassable and unbreathable. They also face challenges of insufficient funds,It is worth mentioning that in some public places like churches, schools and
hospital, waste disposal is controlled and not done at will like else where.
Schools running environmental clubs lay emphasis on proper waste disposal by
educating their students and keeping the school campus clean. A typical example is the
Bamenda University where, school guards and cleaners have put in a lot of effort
to keep the entire campus clean. Recalcitrant pupils and students in other schools
still throw dirt anywhere on campus especially across the windows, in the lockers
and on foot paths.
Waste disposal is still a huge challenge in Bamenda city especially inside the market
thousand people on a daily basis. Waste generation is therefore very high and due to increase in the population proper disposal is a challenge. There are waste bins placed at strategic areas of the
markets but they often get too full before the untimely response from the council
waste disposal team. This notwithstanding, mobile vendors often find ample space
beside these waste bins where they place their goods for sell. This exposes them to
a lot of health risks as mosquitos and flies breed in these wastes in a nutshell, the City of Bamenda can be kept clean if every waste item in the
hands of each individual is disposed properly, especially plastics.
Streets homes and public places would be clean breathable and healthy when a conscious effort is
made to keep the town clean. It takes individual efforts, creation of awareness,
practice of waste separation, and management. Once people make an effort to
dispose any form of waste properly, the population would not be tempted to burn
waste causing pollution and smoke.
Pollution from burnt wastCameroon would need assistance to continue to, put in its endless efforts
in educating the population on waste management practices, proper waste disposal
and waste transformation. People would be made to know about the consequences
of wrong handling as well as the benefits of proper waste disposal to the
community. Poor waste disposal has contributed to climate change and a call to
attention on environmental protection is most necessary. Education on waste
management is important especially knowing how to collect, sort and recycle
waste. CEAPA Cameroon targets, gathering to recycle plastics, in an attempt to
curb plastic waste pollution in the Bamenda City
Thanks for reading hope as we digest it we also endeavour to put it into practice in any area we reside .
Bro it's not only bamenda oh the worst is douala but in my town buea it's better it's not as dirty as bamenda.in school they can control waste disposal well but nowadays schools have lose their sense oh hygiene and sanitation
Since the beginning of the crisis, Bamenda has faced a lot of difficulties with managing waste, waste management has really been a major challenge in Not only Bamenda but other parts of our country as well.
If people can only learn to manage waste we won't have tO bother about the cleaning or how we dispose of it.
People need to learn to separate plastic waste from decaying waste.
This is an amazing and an educative post at that.
it is not only bamenda but cameroon with only one company incharge of clean up why us why cameroon see douala with the worst thing ever
