WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DAY (JUNE 12)?

June 12 is the day that was being set aside by the INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION (ILO) in 2002. This day was set aside to make sure the employment of children in companies to handle hard tasks was eliminated as children has their academic and future to pursue. It is no longer news how some children are being sent to perform hard tasks that might disfigure them or endanger their overall health as well as exposing them to early abuse. This day was then set aside to curb this as many children around the globe are going through this plight especially in Africa where there is little to no law protecting the children against hard labour.

Yearly, thousands of children are been sent out by parents or guidance to embark on street hawking, construction site labour, hard factory tasks etc and leaving these children with little or no time to study or even go to School. The International Labour Organization came into the picture to make sure this practice is reduced to the minimal point. Though there are still some parents that are still practicing this act, but to the best of my knowledge and experience, the rate has really dropped unlike what I had been seeing while growing up, this accolades should be giving to the Internation Labour organization for their immense effort to commemorate a day as June to tackle one of world's problem which is child labour and I hope more will be done in the nearest future.

HOW DO YOUR COUNTRY OR YOUR ORGANIZATION CELEBRATE THE DAY?

Nigeria being my country like that of last year and this year do go on media tour sensitizing and creating awareness on child labour. Also, in commemoration of June 12, the International Labour Organization, the Federal Ministry of Affairs of the Netherlands play a very active role in commemorating this day, they had engage on a tour themed it "Universal Social Protection to end child labour". Public appeal for funds were made to support the children whose parents could not afford to send them to school or pay their tuition fees.

Also, road works were also made in order to create this awareness . People who cared to join the road walk went ahead to, they also chant some songs relating with the right of the children. Children were also in participation as it really concerned them .

Fan fare was also made and gifts were shared to children who participated on the road walk as well as the children they met on the roadside.
At every junction, they will pause and speak against child labour and it's effect on the children. What really grabbed my attention was when they met a certain little girl that was hawking sachet pure water, on of those that participated in the road walk promised to sponsor the little girl till her PhD, this was a dream come through for the little girl and the family.

Reading competition was organized and random children were selected for the competition and those that won were given various prizes as a means of encouragement and booster to take their academics seriously. Also, random children were being quizzes on current affairs and those that made attempt to win or won were rewarded as well. Food were cooked and distributed to the children who were lucky to be there.

WHAT IMPACT DOES YOUR COMMUNITY GAIN DURING AND AFTER THE COMMEMORATION?

As a community, first we do receive a sum to support the less privileged children, most of which are schooling on scholarships, be it part scholarship or full scholarship. This alone helps to foster the degree of literacy in my community bringing to life a society with so much hope, because a learned person is an informed person, and an informed person can not be deform.

Secondly, parents are always aware of the medical, psychological and mental effects of child labour. Being aware of the effect of an action makes one readjust and stay away from such act. The decline in the rate of child labour throughout these years is applaudable as parents and guidance have come to full understanding of the effect of early child labour through the awareness program.

Also, the decline in thuggery and robbery is commendable, because children who were not informed or privileged to go through the four walls of school were always out there performing one vice or the other. Children who have been sent to school have the necessary knowledge of the adverse effects of engaging themselves in smoking, stealing and other vices they could think of. This is really a welcomed development.

WHAT ISSUE OR CONCERN WILL YOU RECOMMEND TO BE COMMEMORATED THIS WEEK AND ON WHAT DATE?

I would recommend NATIONAL CALL YOUR DOCTOR DAY, JUNE 13. Since doctors play a very vital role in our society, ensuring that people's lives are top priorities, they worth to be celebrated and commemorated. In as much as this life is still ongoing, doctors should be celebrated because of their immense effort to saving humanity, taking instance from the pandemic, where they sacrificed their lives alongside with other medical staffs to save the world. They worth it and as such should be celebrated.
