The town of Smederevo is located on the bank of the Danube, in the northeastern part of the Republic of Serbia and represents the administrative, economic, economic and cultural center of the Danube region. The territory of the town, which extends directly in front of the mouth of the Big Morava into the Danube, belongs to the Danube and the lower Pomoravlje. Smederevo is the center and headquarters of the Municipality of the same name, occupying an area of 484 square kilometers, of which 38,817 ha are agricultural land and 2,617 hectares of forest.

The municipality consists of the town of Smederevo and 27 other inhabited places, namely: Badljevica, Binovac, Vodanj, Vranovo, Vrbovac, Vučak, Dobri Do, Drugovac, Kolari, Kulič, Landol, Lipe, Lugavčina, Lunjevac, Mala Krsna, Malo Orašje, Mihajlovac , Osiponica, Petrijevo, Radinac, Ralja, Saraorci, Seone, Skobalj, Suvodol, Widows and Salinac.

According to the 2011 census, the city of Smederevo has 64,175 inhabitants, while 108,209 people live in the entire municipality. Regarding the ethnic structure, the majority population is Serb with a share of 94.1%, followed by Roma with 2.1%, and to a lesser extent there are also Macedonians, Gorani, Romanians, Croats, Montenegrins and other nationalities.

The settlement has been of great importance throughout history, dating back to ancient times, through the Middle Ages, to the present day, as evidenced by the localities in and around the City. The first written trace of Smederevo is in the charter of the Byzantine emperor Vasily II, from 1019, on the occasion of the founding of the Archdiocese of Ohrid, while the next record comes from the charter of Prince Lazar, from 1381, which mentions the Ravanica monastery with the surrounding estates.

In the 15th century, at the time of the despot of Djurdj Brankovic and the Serbian medieval state, Smederevo was the capital city and center of economic and church life. In 1430, the Smederevo Fortress was built on the right bank of the Danube, at the mouth of the Jezav River, and until 1459 the town was the seat of a despot, after which it fell under Ottoman rule. In 1459 it was torn down, but due to its good strategic position on the Danube, the Turks added a fort to their needs. The settlement was the center of the Smederevo sandžak until 1718, when it was occupied by Austro-Hungary, but came under Turkish rule again in 1739.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, during Turkish rule, Smederevo became a classic oriental town, and during the Austro-Turkish wars it changed its masters and was destroyed. After the First Serbian Uprising, on November 8, 1805, the Karadjordje leader received the keys to the Smederevo fortress from the Turkish commander of the city, Muharram Gusha, solemnly, because the Turks had left their weapons and ammunition, and in turn were allowed to leave the city with military honors. While under Austro-Hungarian occupation, Smederevo's development was not interrupted, and during the First Serbian Uprising in 1806, a school was established, as well as a ruling Soviet, headed by Dositej Obradovic.

During the Second World War, the occupier transported and stored ammunition in the fort, where a major explosion occurred on June 5, 1941, killing 3,000 people and covering the city with ground from detonation. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Smederevo developed using its potential, and today it is one of the most developed cities in Serbia.
