POEM OF THE SHIP'S CREW
I cast a piece of wood into the sea,
Stuck a pole and a sail upon it.
With a sailor’s instinct,
I measured the height of the Sun.
The wind was favorable,
Carried me to the ends of the world,
A vagabond’s coat,
The rag of a jerkin.
I slept on the back of the waves,
Stared in awe at the edge of the shores,
Cursed and blasphemed,
Bit cannonballs and spears.
I scorched my bristly skin,
Had my body covered in open sores,
My gums cracked apart,
I rotted from scurvy.
With my left hand, I blessed myself,
With my right, I strangled.
A thousand times I was struck down,
A thousand times I rose again.
My laughter of decayed teeth
Echoed across the seven seas.
I founded cities and lives,
Broke into chests and barrels.
I trembled in the jungle’s darkness,
A crucible of sweat.
I lay upon the sand and grass
With women of every color.
I shaped the keys to the world,
Which others would call their own,
But the one who plunged into the depths
Of the dream—that was me.
My taste is unique.
I taste of salt.
One does not come into this world unscathed
On the shores of Portugal.
