The Diarygame || Travel Diary: Peschici, Umbra Forest. Monday, August 19
Dear members of the Traveling Steem,
I want to sincerely thank everyone who has passionately followed my journey to Peschici. It has been a trip full of discoveries, and now that my vacation has come to an end, I’m facing a long drive back to Milan. However, before leaving this wonderful region, I decided to make one last stop in the northern part of the Foresta Umbra, following the advice of Aurora, the guide who accompanied me during the exploration of the southern part.
As I ventured deeper into the forest, I immediately noticed a change in the atmosphere. Unlike the southern part, here the sunlight struggles to make its way through the dense canopy, creating a cool and shaded environment. The silence was broken only by the songs of birds, and each step I took led me further into a world that seemed suspended in time.
Remembering Aurora’s words, I knew that this part of the forest is famous for its beech trees, which grow at an unusually low altitude for their species, around 230 meters above sea level. This is one of the reasons why the Foresta Umbra has been included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Walking among these ancient trees, which rise majestically towards the sky, was a moment of deep reflection on the power and beauty of the nature that surrounds us.
For those interested in reading my dedicated post about the excursion with Aurora in the southern, drier part of the Foresta Umbra, you can visit my blog.

One of the most magical moments was when I reached the Lago di Umbra, a small body of water hidden in the heart of the forest. The wooden walkway that surrounds it offers a charming view, and the silence around the lake, broken only by the rustling of leaves, created an almost surreal atmosphere. It was the perfect spot for a reflective pause before continuing my journey.
As I explored the forest, I kept my eyes open to spot some wildlife. Although I wasn’t lucky enough to see the rare Gargano roe deer, I was struck by the variety of birds that inhabit this area. The great spotted woodpecker, in particular, seemed eager to announce its presence with every tap on the wood.
This experience allowed me to conclude my journey through the Gargano with a sense of serenity and gratitude. The Foresta Umbra is a place where nature manifests itself in all its grandeur, and leaving this pristine environment was harder than I had imagined.
I invite you to visit this corner of paradise, where every step is a discovery and every corner a natural work of art. Thank you for following my journey, and I hope to take you with me on new adventures.
Tip: Look who I found just outside the forest! The landscape has completely changed, and just a short distance from the forest, everything looks like a desert. This is where the Podolica cows graze, an ancient breed with origins in the Podolian steppes, between Ukraine and Serbia, brought to Italy centuries ago. These resilient cattle are particularly known for the famous caciocavallo podolico cheese (Ruminantia) (Wikipedia, l'enciclopedia libera).
The photos I took during the hike capture only a fraction of this place's beauty, but I hope they can convey at least some of the magic I experienced.
On my way back, I will stop to visit Monte Sant'Angelo, another UNESCO site that I can't let you miss. See you soon!

Thank you so much!👋
Beautiful and I like the desert picture very much. That sky is awesome. I just wonder about the grazing part if it comes to the cows 🤔
I checked on the cows but this is an Italian breed although the far anchestors of this type of cows? No one knows, someone suggested but ukraine didn't exist back then.
Ever searched for the meaning of the word?
I love the green of the trees, they search the light and for the deer you have early in the morning more chance.
Thanks for the tour.
