Good day to all my great friends on Steemit, am glad to be your host on my blog. Read on as I provide you with the solution to a situation that often occurs when doing the dishes: stuck glasses.
This post will provide a solution that does not involve loosing any of the glasses and will also provide the science behind the situation.

Most Common Causes

When glasses are stacked in a cupboard for a while, some will end up stocked in the other. This situation also often happens when we do the dishes with warm soapy water, if after washing, we stacked the glasses waiting to be rainsed.
Attempt to pull it apart has often proved futile, sometimes resulting in the loss of one of the glasses or both.

What is the solution?

I will first of all tell you how to separate the stuck glasses, then I will explain the science and physics behind it.
To separate the struck glasses:

  • Turn on the heat to warm up some water, while you get some cold water from the fridge.
  • Pour out the warm water in to a deep bowel, while the cold water is poured into the open end of the stuck glass.
  • While holding the rim of the glass containing the cool water, deep the other glass into the bowel containing the warm water.
  • Be careful as the glass on the outside will fall off effortlessly onece submerged into the warm water.
  • If it failed to come out, gradually increase the temperature of the warm water in the bowel by slowly adding more warm water.

Explaining the solution

The problem is often caused by linear expansivity and is also best solved by the same phenomenon.
Linear expansivity is the resulting increase or shrinking in the size of a material due to change in temperature, where an increase in temperature results in an increase in size while a decrease in temperature will cause a corresponding shrinking in the size of the same material. ∆∆

This phenomenon is responsible for some windows that are too hard to open in a hot sunny days, but will open itself on a cool rainy day.
It creates the smooth ride we feel when traveling on a bridge on a hot afternoon and the regular bumps due to gaps we noticing when passing the same bridge in the morning or evening.
It is also responsible for cracks on the walls when built without gaps to accommodate expansion and contraction.

Application
When cold water is fill into the stuk glass, it shrinks and becomes smaller by a fraction of a millimeter. And when the outer glass is sunk in to warm water, it increase in size resulting in both glasses being separated.

Linear expansivity is used to regulate and sustain the temperature of our pressing iron. When pressing our clothes, the iron gets hotter which stretches the control material in the iron's thermostat, automatically breaking the circuit and turning off the iron. As the temperature of the iron drops, the control material start getting shorter and turns on the iron again resulting in the off and on that keeps a constant ironing temperature.
The thermostat in our fridge uses the same principal to maintain constant temperature.

Precautions

  • The same principal of leaner expansivity is responsible for most of the broken. glassware in our kitchen.
  • Very hot water will break the outer glass in this exercise.
  • Ice cold water may break the glass stuck inside.
  • Avoid pouring the hot water directly on the glass as it might broke it.
  • It is preferable to use a plastic bowel.
  • After separating the glasses, avoid dipping the glass with the cold water into the warm bowel as a sudden change in temperature might have adverse effects on the glass.

Conclusion

When next your glass gets stuck, remember that correctly applying the knowledge of linear expasivity thought in a physics class would be a very quick solution.
