Beery times in December - Day 7

This year my family created the a DIY Xmas beer calendar from me.

I'm so happy about this that I had to post every day a beer. Even better, I have to taste it before...

This means, each day of the cold and dark @detlev get some light and warm feelings by searching for another beer from that big green Box.

The Beer

Piraat beer was developed and launched in 1982 by Brouwerij Van Steenberghe in Ertvelde, situated near the city of Ghent. This strong amber beer was actually created at the request of the brewery's Italian importer. Interestingly Gulden Draak, the brewery's flagship brew, also saw the light due to a request from the same importer.

Brewed with natural ingredients, Piraat is a true strong amber speciality beer that re-ferments in the bottle. No less than three malt varieties are used to brew this beer (Pale Ale, Pilsener and Munich malt) as well as Aurora and Petra hops.

The use of these selected ingredients results in a beer that comes close in taste and style to the typical European’s IPA’s.

Where the classic Piraat comes close, Piraat Triple Hop, the younger and recently launched sibling can be classified as a 100%, uncut IPA. When creating this copper coloured beer, the brewery found inspiration in tales of pirates, who are notorious for their insatiable thirst..

The Taste

The Piraat is another very good Belgian Beer. This is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale wich is re-fermented with Bordeaux wine yeast. The beer comes with an ABV of 10.5 with an

What does the Expert say:

Appearance: Very slightly veiled deep gold, Under one finger of off-white fluffy white head, Soft carbonation, Very long lasting cap remains.
Aroma: Soft bready malt, Slight caramel, Fruity esters, Apple juice, Pear, Slight pitted fruit.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, Alcohol presence, Slight hop bitterness.
Flavour: Soft bready malt, Slight caramel.
Overall: I normally like to feel a bit of the alcohol, but I found it distracting in this beer. It still fits the style but perhaps could have been more enjoyable if the alcohol was more hidden. Nice complexity in the aroma.

How does this new DIY calendar work?

It is so simple and cool as well.

My family know what I love and the found a big old box wich they painted in green color. Then they filled with some smooth stuff.

I think they „borrowed“ it from the rabbits from our friends house. As you see, even the cats helped with some work. They did the nice “patina“ to the green color.
