As a people, we have the moral responsibility to talk about the challenges of our society. One of such challenges the society is confronted with is streetism. All over the world, major cities are faced with the problem of street children and this cannot be an isolated case.

However, as a society, we sometimes need to compare our circumstance to other societies in order to make an informed decisions. What sets other societies, apart from us is the policies, institutions, and resources put in place to curb, or minimize this problems. Ghana, like many other society is confronted with the problem of Street children. This, however, can be solved if the society come together to find a solution to it. Our roads are flooded with children who moves to fend for themselves from the street, with an estimated 90,000 reported to be on the streets of Ghana. These are children with dreams, dreams, on the streets dying everyday.

The menace of street children is something the society and the State as a whole is guilty and this is hinged on numerous issues. Children at the age of 11 years are found on our principal cities begging to fend for themselves and sometimes to cater for their family. I can count millions of issues that serves as the root cause of this problem however, i seek not to bother you with the causes of this problem and how to remedy it.

The purpose of every article or write-up is to elicit response from authorities or give a solution to a problem stated in the article. But that's not the case of this write-up. I am writing to inform and remind you that, street children should not be viewed as miscreants, thieves that are always discriminated against and hated upon. They should be rather seen as a failure of the society and the breakdown of the family system where the child of another is seen as yours and the society as a whole. The kids on our streets are not inherently criminals or delinquents. They are a manifestation of the breakdown of state institutions and agencies that ought to help this children on the street through family re-union or integration.

The next time you see a child on the streets, don't just conclude that they're criminals but think about their dreams, think about their future, thing about the moral obligations we have towards them, think about the ticking bomb waiting to explode due to the neglect of these children by the society(State)
