University education is to prepare every graduates for the world of work and to help them make better decisions and become a problem solver. The educational system in Ghana is a huge problem likewise the poor decisions taken by graduates before completing their course of study. More often than not, graduates takes decisions that leads to their ultimate failure after schools. Today, i am going to share with you some mistakes graduates often make while in school or after they have graduated.
Focus on schooling not educationThe first mistake graduates of today make is to focus on schooling and not education. While
schooling is basically the routine method of attending college and receiving a degree, which can or might not imply that the person has the required skills and is job-ready despite the book knowledge. This means that, some graduates do attend regular lectures and make assignments yet, are not connected to the routine system that produce individuals that are competence and skilled. Focusing on
Education on the other hand is absorbing all the fabric within the college, connecting the dots and realized the connection of theory to practical life and willing to continue that journey after graduating with a degree. Graduates often focus on the routines of learning and passing instead of connecting with what they learn while in school.
Poor skills setAnother mistake graduates of today make is poor skills set such as; creative problem-solving, emotional intelligence, decision-making, interpersonal and teaming skills, effective communication, sound character, proactive skill-set, integrity and high level personal ethics, self-esteem, self–discipline, managerial skills, and abilities that translate ideas to desired results are rarely taught as a part of education curriculum. These set are often called
soft-skills These are skills that can be learnt while one is still in school and can be harness and sharpen through regular practice. The solution to this is reskilling and continuously building skills throughout your years in school.
Poor planning before completionOne big mistake graduates make is to poorly plan before graduating. Most graduates start planning when their national service is almost at end. They do not have long term and short term plans on where they want to work and how thy seek to achieve that. In other to plan well, your intent career must be clearly defined and it's destination identified and reviewed regularly.
Poor networking and Leadership skillsJust as the poor skills set, most graduate do not have good leadership abilities and their networking skills is also bad. Network they say, determines your net worth. Some students go to school for years without more networks in their arsenals. As a student, you must have more friends you share the same aspirations with and continue to be in-touch with them even after school.
I believe the little shared here and many others are one of the numerous mistakes made by today's graduates.
